Name a typical old geezer scent

re samples: Bentley for Men Intense (spray), I get leather, a more powerful Bvlgari Man in Black! partly due to a liberal spray vial on this sample, anyway I like both but more is going on in Bentley for Men Intense, highly recommended if looking for a scent beyond office safe but do not blind buy a full bottle go for a sample...

re samples: Tom Ford Grey Vetiver EdP (dip stick), classy and fresh, well behaved imagine a one foot on the floor scent, all young guns out there take note, this is what you wear when off to meet girlfriend's parents for the first time. (there is also the EdT version but it is too safe with both feet planted on floor)

re samples: Lalique Encre Noire (spray), I keep reading “dark, rainy nights, bonfires, long drives through the forest, grass field after the rain, all things goth” and other pretentious interpretations, I get vetiver, slightly bitter, slightly sweet, woody and smoky as in synthetic iso-E woody and smoky, a bold vetiver style, was a fan for maybe an hour then washed it off.

re Lalique samples: Encre Noire vs Encre Noire Extreme, well EN has got a Bam! In your face quality that I find tiresome after novelty is gone vs ENE, a toned down version, no idea why it is called Extreme, toned down to make it more wearable I guess but still not a fan, so Noire vetiver: Pass.

If you want to sample Vetiver done really well then I recommend sampling Frédéric Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire.

I had a bottle of Lalique Encre Noir but found it too, I don't know, 'screechy', a bit OTT.

VE on the other hand is an entirely better scent. It wowed me from the first spray and it's only the outrageous price tag that has stopped me buying it. Money no object, this would be on my shelf right now.

Not many fragrances have had such an immediate and long lasting effect on me (maybe half a dozen*) and I've been into smellies for 35+ years.

re samples: Baldessarini Ultimate (spray), the nose behind it, Geza Schön, is a hot shot in the perfume world but my nose thinks he shot himself in the foot with this one, I get spicy pepper and sweet flowers to start with but the advertised warm oriental base that caught my interest shopping for samples turns out to be a cheap sour funk, no can do, binned.

Lesson learned so far:

scent profile plus signs for me when ordering samples after checking over at Fragrantica: leather, amber, wood, oriental, warm and warning signs: citrus, fresh, clean, office safe

sillage/projection: I like scents to stay within arm's reach or hugging distance so huge sillage/projection = tiny spray

longivity: this is important as I refuse to be seen carrying a purse on my arm with a spare bottle of cologne but as an old geezer used to Antaeus et al I find that modern scents often fall short in this respect not lasting a full day

Leather, Amber, Wood, Oriental?

Try Ambre Sultan, Musc Ravegeur, CK Obsession for Men, Ambre 114, Lonestar Memories and Patchouli 24 (ignore the name it's all leather and smoke like Bulgari Black but much better).

retested "binned" scents: John Varvatos Oud Eau de Parfum for Men and Baldessarini Ultimate Eau de Toilette for Men, still not my favourite scents but this time my nose was happier, looking back my take is avoid manual labour like gardening as the cologne sweat mix may turn scent into a not very pleasant smell.

re samples: Aramis, not as strong as I remember but add some loud music, smell of beer and cigarette smoke and sweat, mix with pretty girls, and I am back in the 70s :) (though I believe Travolta was wearing Brut)

Was thinking Brut to sample the past but I notice a couple of different versions on the market not sure which one is closest to the original.

I have read that they tweaked Aramis decades ago adding more leather. The original bottle looked like a brown bullet FWIW. There was a limited run some years back of an Aramis Gold that was said to be the original version. I had two bottles, but sold them as quite frankly I could tell little difference only that the Gold was initially slightly more potent, but after 15 - 20 mins. they were the same. YMMV. It's still a killer AS/cologne and it has a certain.....savage effect, if I may state, upon women. ;)
