Noxzema as a Pre-shave

I have read in some of the U.S. Shaving forums that some people use Noxzema as a pre-shave. Has anyone here used it and how well did it perform?
Try using a Neutrogena Glycerine Soap Bar, really effective at cleansing face and softening whiskers. Available on Amazon, sometimes in UK Discount Stores.

I used Noxzema cleansing cream as a pre-shave this morning. I use it like Proraso pre-shave and think it has a similar effect to soften the skin/bristles, prevents my face drying out while preparing lather etc and provides a more comfortable shave.

It's very cheap and you get a massive tub of the stuff but it doesn't half pong. If the stink doesn't interfere with your lather then no probs but I don't use it with posh-soaps for that reason.

I use it regularly as a pre shave as I have quite sensitive skin. As stated above it helps with slickness and I find I get less irritation from my shaves when I use it.

It's the face cream they're banging on about, you know.

Same as Proraso pre/post, by all accounts.

What else is there? I use the original cream as a soap before shaving - whereas I wouldn't do the same with Proraso pre shave.

Noxzema cream is a bit of a misnomer in that it has a creamy consistency but is in fact a cleanser.

My father used Noxema as a pre-shave and post-shave all his life. He called it Wonder Cream as he said it was effective on all minor skin conditions including sunburn. I have a jar of it, which I occasionally dip into, but I'm not a fanatic as my father was. I find that using any kind of pre-shave, including Noxema, does not improve the quality of my shaves in any appreciable way so I don't use any; just good old warm tap water to soften my beard.

I am currently both using Noxema and Proraso white preshave creams. Both perform very well...they create a nice slick layer under the lather. Great post shave feel as well. Comparing the two: I prefer the Proraso scent more than the Noxema...but I prefer the price of Noxema to the more expensive Proraso. Performance is about the same. I used to use preshave oil, but I shelved those when I discovered the preshave creams.

I have used Noxema since I first heard of the stuff being used as a pre-shave. What I do is

1. Lather up with the soap of the day and shave WTG.
2. Rinse slighty to make sure my skin is moist.
3. Apply a thin layer of Noxema, rubbing in but not rinsing off.
4. Squeeze lather out of the bristles onto hand and lift with brush to paint on so as not to remove Noxema layer.
5. Shave XTG/ATG.

I wouldn't be without the Noxema as it provides a high degree of extra lubrication for my easily razor-burned skin. So much so that I even carry a small pot in my toilet bag when away from home.

Two points to be aware of are that 1) it will make the sink messier and a bit harder to clean and 2) with SOME soaps, the Noxema will evolve a small amount of ammonia from the Ammonium Hydroxide it contains - enough so you are aware of the smell of ammonia. This happens with Haslinger Schaffmilch and couple of others I can't remember.

I think Noxcema is the better foam in bottle but I only understand use it as a preshave if you have any bottle in your house. I would not buy it for use as a preshave, I think that any foam classic soap is better than Noxcema for that use.

a lot of fellows in American forums talk about using noxcema as the actual shave soap/crem/brushless lather.

I cannot ever get them to give the actual product name or upc code. so many noxcema products.

Does this help?

That's the one I use on occasion Mr. S. If I've got skin probs I wash with it and use it as a pre and after shave. Used sparingly it works excellently for me. Don't know if it's me, however the pump bottle just doesn't feel quite the same performance.

I've used it as a pre shave many times with excellent results. I do use it daily as my pre shave cleanser, and for this purpose i dip my brush in it and take it to my face as if lathering but actually cleansing.
