Closed Completed: Pass Around - Tatara Masamune Razor

Hello @riverrun
Can I please drop out of this pass around? I just can't see myself buying this razor based on that handle, and since new handles are not planned any soon I see no point in trying it....thanks for the opportunity anyway

Certainly.
I won't buy the razor myself, but certainly not because of the handle... I love the handle.
I won't buy it because it's not a vintage SE razor below £20... :D

Well I've spent a week shaving with the Tantara Masamune razor and I didn't really want to pass it along to the next lucky person.
It is a really well made razor, the head design ensures the blade is clamped and held perfectly, so no worry about blade alignment or blade slop, perfect.
The handle has dimples all over it ensuring a good grip even when wet and soapy, I would have liked to have seen a slightly fatter handle but that's just me being fussy, the stock handle worked perfectly and was comfortable to hold in use.
The weight of the whole razor is spot on, not to heavy, not too light, just perfect along with the ballance. I found I didn't need to think where is the optimum place to hold it, it just came to hand and I knew it was right.
The cutting angle, again, it just came to hand without me trying to find it, it was almost too easy! :)
The shave was lovely, I used three different blades and it seems to work well with any good blade so it's not one of those blade sensitive razors, just stick your blade of choice and shave! Perfect. I used both the closed comb and the open comb and found with me shaving every day the closed comb plate was more than enough.
The heavy razor stand was good for holding the razor when in the bathroom and with its drain hole in the bottom didn't fill up with water.
I would have liked to see the same dimpling that is on the handle carried onto the stand also but again I'm just being fussy, it did its job well.
I like that it has a serial number on the underside of the bottom plates, it makes it that little bit more special and I also like that the top cap was left plain, I wouldn't have wanted to see the samurai engraving on the top cap! Perfect where it is.
It's a good looking razor that gives the Feather ASD2 a run for its money and it ( for me ) shaves a lot better than the Feather ever did!
Could this have been improved? I don't think so although I would like to see one made from brass, just because I love brass!
There is only one thing that needs looking at and that's the cleaning out the swarf in the handle which I found when cleaning and drying after first use, in with a Q Tip to dry the threaded part of the handle and I pulled up some sharp oily swarf with the QTip, one would have thought that would have been addressed before dispatch......maybe I'm just being fussy again but apart from that QC issue I can say this razor is perfect, and I'm not really into DE razors and it's because of this that I won't be buying one, if I was into my DE razors rarther than SEs I would buy one tomorrow :)
Thanks to @Paul and to @riverrun for giving me the chance to use this fab razor. Edit......I agree with riverrun as far as the box is concerned , too heavy, too chunky, too much! I thank you :) P.

Rowlers over on ATG finally said:
Final run out with the Tatara and I'm afraid to say it is not for me..
With the SB it is simply not efficient enough (for me) and I find it, very much like the Guerilla, in that it it is rough. Even with a smooth blade, a Nacet in this instance, I'm left with a vy patchy and irritated shave. The OC is MUCH better, but when I still have to finish off with my 6C, it obviously does nit my face, my stubble, my technique or something such like..

The craftsmanship is absolutely first class. There is no other razor the holds the blade as securely (I may have said that before!) as the Tatara. The locking mechanism is genius. Everything about this razor is top class and I REALLY recommend that you get on this list.
The razor is now with Salv on ATG:

Here's what user Salv has to say about the Tatara over on ATG:
------

Hi all

I have shaved with the razer four times so I am going to give the one review. First impression was that it felt a bit light to what I am used to but when in use I felt the balance was very good. The design and build quality is first class, the locking mechanism is fantastic it holds the blade so securely I found no movement at all. In fact, It's better than any top end razor I own.

Now to the Shaves.

SB base
The first couple of shaves where with the SB I used two different blades both my favourite blades Feather, Personna Med. Prep. I found the angle straight away due to the nice balance of the razor, there was good feedback noise and quit smooth too, I found I needed three pass shave and local touch-ups to get the smoothness I am used to, with my regular DE razors. I have mastered the technique with the regulars needing only two passes. But still I'm impressed with the overall performance of the SB base

OC base
The OC is my favoured base. I used the same blades but new ones. Same no problem finding the angle, little more feedback noise then the SB and more efficient too I found I still needed three passes but no touch-ups and overall slightly better shave all round.

My opinion on the razor
The build quality craftmanship and the fantastic locking mechanism is first class and it shave good too I cannot fault the razor, and if I was not so heavily Involved (obsessed) and invested in straight razor shaving I would go out and buy It.

(for me, one for the future)
