Rate The Last Film You Watched

I'm a sucker for a British coming of age / feel good film. Stumbled across Pond Life. Very enjoyable, and a bit quirky. Filmed in Yorkshire, and Richard Hawley provides the soundtrack ta'boot!

Recorded that the other week. Not sure if I should watch it. o_O

I think it's worth watching because although it's a fictional story a lot is relevant. It shows how the virus runs away despite health organisations trying to do all the right things. That happens because like Covid19 the nature of the fictional virus means people are contagious while asymptomatic. By the time they realise this it is already global. The film does get heavy because of the 20% fatality rate of the fictional virus. Far from being freaked out by the film I was left feeling a tad thankful that Covid19 isn't as fatal. In a way we have been lucky in that Covid19 could have been much worse.

'93 days' is another good virus film. Based on a true story about a Liberian diplomat who lands in Lagos, Nigeria, carrying the Ebola virus.
In this incident the measures deployed to track, monitor and isolate those he came into contact with worked, and the spread was halted. Only 20 became infected with 8 fatalities., a fatality rate of 40%. Nigeria was hugely applauded for their efforts.

The Railway Man

A far better than average movie, but Colin Firth was not the right actor IMO. I still think Timothy Spall is the best living Brit actor. Why? Because he can literally play anyone!!

I know nothing about mountaineering - just watched and totally amazed by Touching the Void. I can't even begin to imagine what those guys must have gone through.

I'm working my way through sporty films. Really enjoyed Closer to the Edge about the TT races. Next up a Sunday in Hell (cycling) & Fire in Babylon (cricket).

If you like cycling films, give 'The water carriers and the stars' a go, it's on YouTube. It's a documentary about the 1973 Giro D'Italia, it's very of it's time and quite trippy, a lovely film.

I get your point about Colin Firth and I thought so too at first. By the end of the film though I felt he had portrayed an average bloke in anything but average circumstances. Which was as it was. I never really liked him as an actor which may explain my initial reservations.

I especially liked his wife's criticism of the environment in the British Legion club. I have no idea if that was based on reality or just creative licence but I've always felt that culture of not talking, even amongst themselves, probably did more harm than good.

Point noted. He was better IMO in his small part in 1917.
