Recommend a DSLR please

Thanks for the suggestions gents, will check these out. I have a few old manual Nikkor lenses kicking around so a Nikon might be good in that respect.

Also keep in kind your amazon uk account works in the EU so you can profit from the nice conversion rates at times!
I got my d3300 from amazon.de for almost the price of a d3200 from amazon.co.uk
check warranty t&c's prior to ordering though!
(i have however after finding this out saved myself well over £200 just from ordering random from EU states..)

Sounds like a good start.
Ahhhhhh the F301, i used to love that camera.
If you are going in at the bottom end, I think as long as you can get 5-6 MP you will be fine.
I don't know about others, but mine has an easy switch from RAW to jpeg which i find useful if i am just taking some
quick snaps to send to people. I am guessing that all makes do this type of thing?

I used to have an FM2 at home and use F3s at work, which were pretty similar to your F301 I guess -- lovely cameras; the last of the old heavy metal Nikons

Didn't know about that . . there's a steep learning curve ahead, methinks... :)

Ask yourself - Do you really NEED a DSLR?
I threw this question back and forth a few year ago, finally decided on a Lumix FZ38. Its is superb, does everything I could possibly want and I don't have to decide which lens I "might" need.
I WILL get a DSLR in the future though when I have more time to actually use it....

Howdo,

It's probably a frequently asked question, but is there a stand-out DSLR towards the lower end of the price spectrum?

It would be mainly used for ebay listings, SotD pictures and potentially for ipad app content, plus everyday pics. Good macro ability and lenses would therefore be important. If it takes video as well, so much the better since sellers increasingly put Youtube videos to good use in demonstrating items for sale these days (hopefully not shaving gear though!).

Thanks for any pointers.

I'm a big Nikon fan, I've been using their SLRs for a very long time. Unfortunately, like with a lot of things, you often get what you pay. The best to get, would be a D90, D7000, D7100 or D7200. Ordered in price. The reason for this choice is that they have a motor. The D3xxx and D5xxx series doesn't. Although you can get macro lenses for these the choice is a bit more limited. I suggest, if you get the D90 or other in that series that you get both a Tokina 100mm, and a Nikkor 50mm lens. Both have very good reviews.

Another thing to remember is that zoom lenses need better lighting, hence the Tokina 100mm suggestion as it's a prime lens and doesn't need as much lighting as, for example, the 55-200mm lens. Zoom lenses have more elements, which, as you can guess have a tendency to mush the light a bit, its not possible to construct a perfect piece of glass that doesn't interfere with light.

Once you've decided on what to get, read the review at www.kenrockwell.com. He speaks a lot of truth. I often end up buying from www.hdewcameras.co.uk or www.digitalrev.com/shop.

^ Helpful info eneville, many thanks. The fact that I have a few lenses already makes a nikon body a tempting option but would be manual focus, which would be fine actually for most things.

Interesting point, rowlers, I'll have a look into these halfway cameras as you suggest. See I've just missed one in the BST :)

Nothing wrong with manual focus :) In the lower left corner of the viewfinder is an indicator to tell you if your focus is too close, too far, or just right by giving you a little green dot.

Don't shun your manual lenses, often they have very, very clear pictures.

A used D300 (D300S if you want video) gets my vote. Older gen of semi pro dslr from Nikon. Built way better than the consumer level offerings. They're a bargain these days for what they are, extremely capable cameras.

For the uses you've specified...take your pick though really. I'd go so far as to say a dslr for ebay ads and app content is overkill but if you fancy one go for it they're good fun

Hi mate that is a great offer I have exactly the same camera and paid just under £1000 around 6 months back (John Lewis for the 3 year guarantee) . Fully touch screen, wifi compatible, great lens, excellent HD video and photography quality.

The advice I had and ignored when I did photography was to buy a better body second hand. I wish I did! Better value and you won't feel as bad when it ends up in the cupboard.
As for the lens it will be slow and comparatively not as a good quality say if you got two lenses e.g. 17-50 & a 70-200.

That lens is for people moving from a point and shoot that still don't want to swap lenses but want something that covers a big range.
