Shaving with an SE Wedge Blade

I really can't see any advantage in using a Rolls without the guard as opposed to using a straight. The advantage of a straight is that you can control angles more readily - the thought of having a blade at 90 degrees to a handle and then trying to establish the correct shave angle just seems weird.

As for sharpening on a hone - I too would be interested in how this is done. With a straight razor both edge and spine are flat on the hone and that establishes the correct bevel angle. How are you doing that with the Rolls blade?

The Rolls Blade is Done the same way Rob..One layer of tape keeps the Bevel to Suit the Rolls System..:p

As Far as the Guard goes I guess its a Personal thing But most folks that are into them that I know Don't use the Guard either..The Blade must be at a Rough Guess about 75 Degrees..Its actually a very natural shaving angle..:D

Two Pass Shaving Pass Routine..

Hot Water prep & massage with Coconut Oil
CV. Heljestrand Lather Catcher
Heljestrand Hollow Ground Blade (Freshly Honed)
Kent BK2 Pure badger
Haslinger Tallow Shaving Soap
LOGONA Mann Aftershave

I just had a shave today with my CV. Heljestrand with a Freshly Honed Hollow Ground Blade..This is the (PSA) Sticky back Aluminium Oxide Lapping Film I am using here..12 Micron to Set the Bevel, 5 Micron, 3 Micron & 0.5 Micron for a Final Polish..The 0.5 Micron Needs to be cushioned so I just kept the sticky on & Sealed it flat with water & it worked a Treat..o_O

Just like the Rolls Blade the work is in Setting the Bevel..I had Rounded the edge of this blade in my early days of using the Magnus Auto Strop with too much Zeist..Auto Strops are Fine but they require a very light Touch..People that were using these back in the Day would have been used to Stropping Lightly with a Stropping Handle & would have understood a Light touch..I wouldn't recommend an Auto strop to anybody that isn't Proficient at using a stropping handle..Auto Strops are not a Magic Wand..A Great Tool for someone whom is already proficient at Stropping in the usual manner.

One WTG Pass & One ATG Pass & Dolphin Smooth..This Freshly Honed Blade has a Keen Edge but more Importantly it is very Smooth & Comfortable..As Smooth as Icing on a Cake..I Need to get some 15 Micron as its a bit of work with the 12 Micron to set the Bevel..The 12 Micron does the Job though..

Lapping Film is a Good way to Go for anybody Learning to Hone without a lot of outlay..Its easy to use as long as its Flat..I am tending to use a wider cut now because if I have trapped anything underneath I can still find a clear line..The Sticky back stuff is not Ideal for that reason but its the easiest to get in the UK..Lapping Film in the USA is far Cheaper & Easier to get..;)

Smashing Shave today with the CV. Heljestrand..This is One Almighty Shaving Tool..Its Worth 100 Hundred SE razors and Maybe then Some..This Blade is going to a Friend in the USA @Karl G along with a Streamline Set that he bought in the UK..I hope I have done a Good enough Job on the Blade for Karl to Experience the Wonders of a Hollow Ground Blade that is properly Honed & Sharpened..:D

Thanks for loads of great info @Fergiebilly
Lynn's videos are great as well as the threads you shared. Am considering a coticule or lapping film but have yet to decide.
So you use the SlashTool on the Rolls and the bayonete on the Heljestrand?
If not, how do you hold, guide and turn the blade when stropping and honing?

I don't have a Slash Tool..I just use One layer of tape to Strop and Hone..I leave Wings hanging at the side to flip it Over..I have shown Pics of this if you look back on this Thread..o_O

As far as stropping a Heljestrand blade goes I use a Stropping Handle or a Magnus Auto Strop which I have also shown in this thread..There is no Handle for a Rolls blade so the Tape does the Job..Look back in this thread..The Intel is there..:p

That's clever. I saw those wings but never thought they were for grabbing the blade from there to hone and strop. Pretty clever. Thanks again!

Honed up my first wedge last night. It is the old Comet in my 1902 Star. The blade was in really rough shape. As you can see there is a big chip on the end. This blade lived a long life. A good 5mm of wear I would guess.

I had to start with 320 grit paper to try and get the big smile out of the blade. It took 45 minutes to get it evened out enough that the blade was fairly even. I then moved to the lapping paper 12,9,53&1. Then I gave it 40 laps up and back 1 lap On my Allegro.

I wanted to give the blade a go in the Rapide. Unfortunately it was too short for the Rapide to adjust to it. So I used the Star.

First stroke with the blade was nice and smooth. I finished off the first pass with the Star. I found it to be very mild. I did my last 2 passes with the Rapide.

So I will count my first attempt at honing a success.

A much better shave with the Nordic Beauty this morning. :)

After some consultation with @Billyfergie it became clear that I was keeping the angle too shallow, too flat to the face. And, I was probably adding too much pressure to get it to cut at a nearly flat angle. I wouldn't say today's shave was like skaters on ice, but it was way better than the last two. Whisker reduction was just within the range of acceptable on the first two passes but really good by the third. In fact, after some wet touch ups I finished with a mostly BBS. More practice is needed but I'm now feeling good about the road ahead. :p

Three Pass Shaving Routine..

Hot Water prep & massage with Argan Oil
C.V Heljestrand Hollow Ground SE
C.V Heljestrand Hollow Ground Blade (Freshly Honed)
Fitchard Pure Badger
Haslinger Tallow Soap
Thayers Original Witch Hazel

I spent some time this Evening Honing a C.V Heljestrand Hollow Ground..This Blade is NOS from the Factory but the Bevel hadn't been Set..I used One from the Box before & it lasted for Months with Just Stropping it..Must have been Lucky with that One..I had a late Evening Shave with it as I am Free to Play Tomorrow because its Holiday time..:)

The Freshly Honed C.V Heljestrand Blade was Ever So Sharp & Forgiving..Smooth as Icing on a Cake..I knew before I stuck in the Razor that this was Gonna be a Real Smooth One..I used to think that the Rolls Wedge Blades were Smoother but Not Anymore..I look for an Almost Invisible Edge Kinda Feeling when I Touch the Blade when I am Honing it..The C.V Heljestrand is like a PAL Injecomatic on Steroids Sorta Post Shave Feeling...It just Shaves Ever so Darn Close..A very light Touch & Zero Pressure is Required like a Straight Razor Shave...These Hollow Ground Edges are Sensitive & Demand a Constant Mindfulness..;)

That's Said..I Can Throw the C.V Heljestrand around with some Abandon & I am Dolphin Smooth & Had the Shave of My Life Tonight with this Nordic Beauty..:D
