Three Pass Shaving Routine..

Hot Water Prep & Massage with Argan Oil

Heljestrand Hollow Ground Blade x 5
French Fitchard Pure Badger
Tabac Tallow Soap
Humphreys Witch Hazel

I Had the Most Wonderful Shave this Morning with my CV. Heljestrand Lather Catcher & Hollow Ground Blade..This Swedish work of Art is just the Dogs Danglies..Air Craft Precision Engineering of the Day..I am of the Opinion that No Factory SE Razor can Look Near this Razor for Comfort & Over All Performance & a Luxurious Shave..This is One Darn Luxurious Shaver Indeed..:p

Anybody that is Having the Slightest Tugging Issues with these Hollow Ground Blades...Well..They are Not Proper Shave Ready & that's it in a Nut Shell..The Weight of the Razor is Too Much..Too Much Pressure..The Touch Needs to be Lighter then Light..Like a Feather Blowing in the Wind..o_O

This is a Real Hussies SE cause it demands a Woman's Touch..I Rinsed with Cold Water & Applied My Witch Hazel & Not even a Hint of a Sting..I am thinking of Doing away with my Schick Twin Blade Shaving System because this CV. Heljestrand is has Just Taken Over that Role for Me..

I am On My 5th Shave Since Honing this Blade & its Just Settled in..It has a Killer Edge But as Smooth a Butter Knife on the Face..I have the Most Perfect all Over Every Darn Direction BBS Result & My Skin is Velvety Smooth..;)

I Am of the Opinion that these Hollow Ground Blade SEs are the Grand Ultimate Shaving Instruments with a Properly Honed & Sharpened Blade..Oh..Yeah..Anybody that has One of these CV. Heljestrands..Use the Guard Bar..If You Don't Lift the Guard Bar You will Prematurely Blunt the Blade by Slipping it Down..Its Subtle but it Effects them Over Time.

That's Why its there & that's Why I Stopped Using Lather Catchers without a Guard Bar..Thats Me Talkin Tho..:D

Three Pass Shaving Routine...

Hot Water Prep & Massage with Argan Oil
Rolls Razor
Hollow Ground Blade
Fitchard Pure Badger
LEA Tallow soap
Humphreys Original Witch Hazel

I had a Test Shave this Morning with this NOS Rolls Razor Set that I Just Restored for a TSR Member..The Rolls Hollow Ground Blade Took a Very Keen Edge after Honing it..More Importantly..Its as Smooth as a Butter Knife..Anybody that is Looking to Hone a Hollow Ground Blade..Well Just Look at the Lovely Shiny Bevel on the Top Pic..That's What You Should See from the Bevel Setting Hone You are using with the Naked Eye..If You Don't See this Sparkling Edge then You haven't Set the Bevel..o_O

The Bevel Must be Set before You can Move on Through the progression System...In Fact the Honing Process Does Not Even Begin Until You have RESTORED THE EDGE..Because that is What We are Doing at the Bevel Setting Stage..This is the Same for any Hollow Ground Blade..The CV Heljestrand Blades are the Same..The Rolls Blade is Sheffield Steel & Cuts Faster then the CV Heljestrand Blades..This is because the CV Heljestrand Blades are Made from Much Harder Swedish Tempered Steel the Same as their SRs & I Have Honed a Some Swedish Steel SRs..

One is Not Harder to Hone than the Other or Made of Better Steel..The CV Heljestrand Blades Take Longer to Cut is All But they Take a Killer Edge..A Hard Steel Carbon Blade would Not Work in the Rolls System Any Roads...The Rolls System would Not be Capable of Maintaining an Edge..The Softer Steel Sheffield Blade Is Easier Cut & Maintained on the Rolls Honing Pad..There We Have it..:)

I Am BBS Dolphin Smooth & Refreshed..:D

I had the Most Wonderful Shave with My Rolls for the SE September Celebration..A Most Perfect Every Darn North to South & East to West BBS Result was Had with this Grand Old Shaver..I Haven't Shaved with a Factory Blade Razor in Months & No Wonder..I have been Shaving with SRs & Occasionally Hollow Ground Blade SEs..o_O

After I Honed this Blade Sometime Ago I got Kinda Thinking..These Rolls Blades are Designed to Be Stropped & Honed in the Rolls System with Some Amount of Pressure that Most Hollow Ground Blades would Not Stand Up Too..I Cant Quit Figure what they have Done to the Edge to Sustain this Kinda Treatment..Any Roads..On that Note..I Decided to Hit the Chromium Oxide for 30 Laps or Whatever I thought it Would Take to get a Darn Fine Killer Finished Edge after Coming Off the Hone..;)

On the Factual Knowledge that the Rolls Uses a Pressurized System I Used some Pressure on the Chrom/Ox Pasted Paddle Strop..Well Darn Me all the Way to Hell & Back..I had a Killer Edge but Still Very Smooth..Now..I Would Never Do that Amount of Laps on Chrom/Ox with any Other Blade Never Mind the Pressure..If You Attempted this Method with a Swedish Steel CV Heljestrand or any other SE Hollow Ground Blade it would just have a Negative Effect..Far Too Much Gun so to Speak..The Rolls Blade is Different from any Other SE Hollow Ground Blade for Sure..

I Am Dolphin Smooth & Refreshed..:D

I Had Another Wee Test Drive with My Newly Aquired Naniwa Professional 1 K Stone after Yesterdays Escapade with a Dud Factory NOS CV Heljestrand SE Hollow Ground Blade..There is No Bevel on these Blades from the Factory So to Speak & One had a Bit of Corrosion on the Edge..I Played Around with Slurry from a Few Laps with the 320 Grit Lapping Plate..The Professional 1 K Stone is a Lot Harder than the 1 K Super Stone for Sure..o_O

For Me the Professional 1 K Stone isn't a Better Stone But it Will Handle a Number of Blades with Less Wear & Tear than the Softer 1 K Super Stone I Reckon that Haven't Been Honed before like these Factory Fresh Blades..I Didn't Notice Much of a Difference in the Scratch Marks either as this a Very Smooth Cutting Stone...All in All..I Like it & I Got it to Take any High Volume Work Away from My Treasured 1 K Superstore that I Want to Keep for Re Hones on SRs that Don't Require More Work..;)

After Setting the Bevels on the 1 K Professional Stone..I Honed these Two NOS CV Heljestrand Hollow Ground Blades On a Naniwa Super Stone Progression..3k 5k, 8k, 12k & 1 Micron Lapping Film on a Cushion as My Finishing Hone..10 Sets on 0.5 Micron Chro/Ox + 10 Sets on 0.2 Micron Red Rhodium...These Blades Took a Darn Wicked Edge & the Bevels Shine like a Mirror..There is Hardly a Tell Tale Hone Mark on these Factory Fresh NOS Blades..:D

it raises a question on what can and cannot be honed.

its "common" knowledge that the vintage thin gem STYLED blades aren't worth much in lapping, unless its the heldjstrand from Sweden, or the very early Sheffield stuff for the Wilkinson . However the use of the lapping films raises the question of how we can keep the old blades going longer.

I Covered that here in this Thread..The Gem Type Stropping Blades Can be Maintained & Brought Back with Lapping Film & Pastes..:)

Morning gents,

Yesterday was a hard day for me, we lost one of our two guinea pigs completely unexpectedly and at a young age. I am absolutely devastated. Amazing how much a little creature like a guinea pig can get to you. Horrible.

I wanted to distract myself in the evening with a shave I've wanted to have for a long time, using a razor I've had for a little while but not worked myself around to using, the CV Heljestrand Wedge SE. @Fergiebilly honed the blades for this lovely razor and I know he did a great job on them. He warned me I was highly likely not to get a good shave out of it on my first attempt and he was (as usual) right.

I lathered up with my favourite soap, Wickhams 1912 Cashmere, using my Brad Sears Oriignal Gonzo 24mm Silvertip. Second time using this brush and it is lovely, really enjoy using it

The shave itself started off really well on my cheeks, I thought “this isn't bad, what's Billy talking about”, then I got towards my chin and upper lip and it all went wrong. It started to tug and pull, regardless what angle I used it was cutting but it was really uncomfortable! I persevered for a little bit and tried to do some of my neck (which was better than the chin and upper lip), but eventually gave up and switched over to the GEM OCMM. Finished off that first pass and lathered up for a second pass. Ended up smooth with no weepers or irritation. I was happy not to cause any damage with the CV Heljestrand but a little disappointed with my very apparent lack of technique! It was still a good shave though given the circumstances. We now have to find a new companion for our remaining pig, she's lost her sister and they are not solitary animals. It's going to be hard accepting a new pig (or two) into the fold, the one we lost had a special place in our hearts.

Hope you all have a good Monday.

I Hope the lost Guinea Pig Turns Up..I Have Lost My Rat for Days & Got it Back..Yeah..These Hollow Ground Blade SEs are a Serious Learning Curve a Bit Like SRs..You Have to Learn How to Shave.."Period"..That's is in a Nutshell..Its Not Until One Uses Hollow Ground SEs & SRs One Learns that they Don't Know How to Shave..

Factory Blade Razors are Like a Planes Auto Pilot..Hollow Ground Blade SEs & SRs are When You Have Full Control of the Joy Stick..Or Another Analogy..Factory Blade Razors are Like a Child on a Pushbike with Stabilizer's..In Short..Hollow Ground Blade SEs Take a Lot of Skill to Use..And Yeah..Those Blades are Wicked Sharp..:)

All..Factory Blade Safety Razors are the Equivalent of Cartridge Razors Compared to Traditional Hollow Ground Blade SEs..There is Nothing Traditional about Any Disposable Factory Blade Razor..:D

Sorry, bad choice of word, she passed away so no chance of getting her back unfortunately. I love rats, the Mrs hates them. No chance of every getting rats.

Can't disagree with anything you've said there. I'm still on the learning bike! Lovely razor though, really hope I learn to master it. Not many youtube vids on SE Wedge shaving, just got to muddle your way through a little!

Haha you know I don't ignore it! I try and follow advice to the letter, it's from people who know far more about this business than I currently do or probably ever will :)
