Single, extra-coarse ingrown

Chaps, can any of you shed some light on a rather weird phenomenon I've experienced this past few days? Occasionally over the past year or so, I've experienced an annoying ingrown just under my chin on the left hand side. It's always sorted itself out before, but recently, in an attempt to obtain the same closeness on my chin as everywhere else, I've been shaving at 45 degrees to the grain, which is N-S, and this seemed to prompt it to reappear, and, on close inspection, I could see it emerging, growing across the surface for a few millimetres, then ingrowing. This evening, I decided to do something about it, and, after pulling it so it was no longer ingrowing, I decided to yank it out. This is where the weird part come in. It was noticeably thicker than even my normally coarse beard hair, and, instead of the usual bulb-shaped root, it had an acute-angled hook.

I've done some preliminary internet searches, and the only similar phenomenon I could find was pili multigemini, but that refers to multiple shafts from a single follicle, whereas I'm sure this was a single, abnormally-thick hair.

I've had this more times than i can remember more so from the use of carts every so often i seemed to get a ingrown around my AA but sometimes its with 2 hairs in the one follicle and it always seems to be a short one and and a really long one that's folded over i normally just pull any ingrowing hair and carry on as normall...

I have always had a lot of ingrowing hairs (and a few of the multi-shaft affairs which end up like horn given how coarse my stubble is) and quite often end up with very thick hairs. These thick ones tend to be softer too, I've always put it down to having absorbed extra moisture and are thus slightly swollen after having been beneath the skin for a while.

Nothing scientific in my assessment! Just a blind guess with no reasonable basis.

That would also be my assessment.

Had an odd one the other day, a very thick bristle I noticed after shaving. Felt it with my fingernail and it was quite woody, I tried with tweezers to grab it but it was a little short so I gave it a little squeeze around to see if it would protruded and it did enough that I didn't need tweezers. I grabbed it with fingers and removed it easily but it was like a splinter about 4mm long and 0.3 to 0.5mm diameter.

Could have been multiple hairs from one follicle but also it could have been a splinter although I would have thought I would remember getting it.

Sounds just like my multi-hair jobs. If you take the time to fiddle with the thing after extraction it eventually separates into two or three branches of normal hair, but the combined thickness (together with whatever it is holding them together) makes it very tough when it's all combined as one.

I fiddled about with mine for a while, but it showed no signs of separation at all.

I used to get a few of these, my experiences were like Chopper's, I'd squeeze the "hair" hard and it would seperate into two or three little strands. It used to freak me out a little to see how easily they came out when gently pulled with tweezers.
I've not had any since starting DE shaving.

i used to get these a lot when i was using a cartridge razor, i get less now, i think that i may just be getting rid of the last effects of the carts. with me it seemed that they often got infected, i'm not missing that! as they formed a nasty spot

i noticed that they didn't need much effort to get out strange stuff indeed

I used to get a lot too but not as many now I've started DE shaving, definately helped. Some were so long and deep had to use a pin to dig them out, had some over a cm long at times and very painful.
I do however still get the odd one and although I have a tinge of the ginge in my fringe, there I said it, yes I'm ginger, the ingrowing hairs tend to be jet black and thicker than normal. Strange! I have always just used tweezers and pulled the little fellas out.

I used to get these when I used to use an electric razor. Don't get them anymore now wet shaving. They were always very easy to pull out.

I've had a few of these over the years. I removed the first one with a tweezer, but it resisted quite a bit. I notived exfoliating made them easier to remove, so now I exfoliate once or twice a week and haven't had one since.
