Today is Wolfgang Mozart's birthday. Ever since I first played Mozart works in orchestras as a kid, I've been struck by how "inevitable" the music is: when you listen to one of his passages, each note is exactly right in relation to the ones before and after it, as if it had to be just as it is. Mozart was renowned as one of the fastest music writers, making very few revisions, giving the impression that he was acting as a conduit to channel divinity rather than just creating the music. As Salieri said in the film Amadeus, "It seemed to me that I was hearing the very voice of God."

So today I have been listening to his oboe concerto in C, a joy to play and here performed by one of the best oboists ever, Heinz Holliger.

Saturday 26th

Prep: Hot shower with Pears Glycerine soap
Pre: Proraso Sensitive preshave
Brush: Omega 10019 Pure Bristle
Soap: P&B Pall Mall
Razor: Ever Ready 1912
Blade: Personna Gem (6)
Post: Cold Water rinse / Boots Tea Tree and Witch Hazel
ASL: Duru Lemon
ASB: Nivea Sensitive

Early start on Saturday as we were travelling up to Bradford for my brother's wedding. Despite the early hour, the shave was fantastic. As close to BBS as I'm likely to get. The day went really well and the happy couple had a great day.

Sunday 27th

Prep: Face wash with Nivea Sensitive facewash
Pre: Proraso Sensitive preshave
Brush: Razorock Plissoft
Soap: OSP Spice Road
Razor: Rockwell 6C (R3)
Blade: Derby Extra (1)
Post: Cold Water rinse / Boots Tea Tree and Witch Hazel
ASL: Old Spice

Back home for a chilled Sunday evening shave which went well enough. Its been a few months since I last tried the Derby blade with fairly indifferent results. My lathering and shaving technique has definitely improved since then so I thought I'd give it another try. Well....I'm still not convinced. The result was ok with 3 or 4 small weepers but I still feel like the blade causes too much juddering despite what seemed a very slick lather. It just doesn't feel as smooth as the various Gillettes I've mostly been using recently and can have another 3 months off.

Have a great week.

Cheers
Steve

Sunday, 27 January

PreShave: Warm water, from the tap
Cream: TOBS Platinum Collection
Brush: Kent BK8
Bowl: My recycled cream bowl
Razor: The Sledgehammer (Merkur 39C)
Blade Nacet (4)
Post Shave: Alum

Fragrance: Floris 89 edt

Yet another great shave with the Nacet—“4 and out” is my usual rule with blades; but it did not feel at all dull, so I'll give it another day. The Platinum Collection is nice—the soapy smell is a refreshing way to start the morning. I've just about finished the tub (though I have a few unopened—was in London the other week, and there was a sale on), I'll have to figure out what to try next.

Hope your Sunday was relaxing....

Excuse my language ladies and gents.....but holy shit what a shave!

I'm continuing to experiment as I explore SE shaving and I've been reading a few other threads with interest, particularly those that are mentioning blade angle and riding the cap.

On my 1st SE shave I felt that the blade was a bit harder work when compared to my DE shaving. I noticed that it felt the blade needed pulled just that little bit harder.

Tonight I really took my time and concentrated on blade angle. I was riding the cap with the handle almost sticking straight out at 90 degrees. The blade felt smoother and I could hear it working away. I checked after my first pass and realised the huge difference it had made. My face was practically BBS and my neck wasn't far behind.

Rather than go XTG on my second pass I kept the angle the same and went straight into ATG. It was effortless and had me BBS all over. No need for a third pass or pickups.

A good rinse and splash with Thayers then my new favourite Floid Vigoroso. A good crisp burn. After my face had cooled I rubbed on a dot of Bart's balm just to feed my skin.

I mentioned before that I enjoy great shaves as it makes me want to try harder next time round. Well the last one was the best, this was better!

It goes to show what this forum can do for you! Thanks for everyone's advice and help!

Hope you all have a great week! [emoji1303]

My themed shave for this evening was 'Art and Artisans'

20190127_185520.jpg

Palette knife - Colonial General
Palette - Kai Captain
Paint brush - Razorock Plissoft synthetic
Paint - Michell's wool fat soap
Retarding gel - Men's grooming Thistle and black pepper facial soap
Varnish - L'Occitane Cade aftershave
Thinning agent - Arran aromatics Sea Salt and Rockrose EDT
Canvas - My face

This evening's theme was inspired by both artisan products and a bit of art on the side.

After a nice 'round the day off' shower a refreshing face wash was a welcome addition with today's purchase of a bar of Men's Grooming Thistle and Black Pepper facial soap. This was a cheap buy from the 'get rid of this' shelf in a local garden centre. Gardens, shaving, shaving, gardens? I guess times are hard and they have to digress a bit from the usual shrubs and tubs of pretty flowers

A second time out with a shaving soap for me and in this particular instance the soap was Mitchell's wool fat which I chose because it seemed to get favourable ratings. Probably not the best way to purchase a product but in this day and age we do have to trust the web to some extent. I have to be honest after the Kent soap a couple of shaves back I really can't see much difference between the two. Both lather exceptionally well, the scents are similar in that they on the whole pretty non-existent, but they do share one similar theme in that I find both to be excellent soaps in providing a wonderful shave. Top trumps, and I am not referring to Donald here.

The Razorock Plissoft was a perfect accompaniment to the Mitchell's and lathered up quickly and with a ruthless efficiency. Job done and a jolly good job at that.

That old dog the general was up to his usual tricks and performing brilliantly at shifting facial hair. What an act and a very hard act to beat. My dog of the moment and I don't own a dog. I have two cats, but cat of the moment doesn't really ring well.

To cap off one perfect shave; my favourite shaving tipple of Cade aftershave. I am sure it would be equally as enjoyable with a cube of ice, but for the moment I'll stick with rubbing it in to my face.

The scent to hand was the Arran Aromatics Sea Salt and Rockrose and very much to hand as it lives by the sink for anyone and everyone to use when they visit the shower room. Being unisex does help and caters for all visitors and shower room users. Other than being for either sex I must say it has a most wonderfully light fragrance about it which really does add a touch of freshness without making a huge statement. Subtle. It has even been known to be used for removing certain odours at times. A bit extravagant to say the least.

Whether for personal use or as an air freshener I give this rarely mentioned scent the highest accolade for being a wonderful does it all EDT. I love it.

Altogether another great shave was had and babies, smooth and bottoms springs to mind. I walk away refreshed, freshened and in shaven heaven

Artisan section out of the way and over to the art. This was the latest piece to roll off the easel today and something I have been working on over the past couple of leaves away from work. Okay I lied a bit as it hasn't quite rolled off the easel yet while the UV varnish dries overnight before it is presented to the house. Once a bit of wall has been found and it can be hung in place I can then forget and ignore it like I do all my other work. It is a me thing. Saying that I am happy with the way it finalised, but I am sure I will find time to hate it at some point.

I think the subject matter is pretty much explanatory.

So a great day was had and with a wonderful clean shaven face I can rest restfully.

I wish you all a great week ahead and may your days be free of facial annoyance
