When razor photography in the wild goes wrong...

I belong to another shaving forum where you often see some gorgeous SOTD photos sporting your shaving gear out in the wild (on the beach, on a log, etc) - all very, very well done and with stunning light, composition and scenery.

Here are two very nice samples of such photos - I hope they don't mind - by;

...and those are just two fine examples amongst many outdoor razor photos posted by a number of people.

So....

I brought a couple of razors with me downtown San Francisco using just my phone to snap away with - and I believe that what emerged was a set of;
"Razor photos in the wild that never should have been taken"

All photos left 100% un-cropped. That's how real this is.

And now, enjoy :)

Join me early morning as I hop on the local bus for a short ride downtown.
Believe me, you don't want to drive - and park - in downtown SF on the weekends..or well, any day really.

Please note how I here tried to capture a bit of both natural, ambient as well as fluorescent light in a strong composition that really makes you think
"Why is there a bowl with shaving stuff on the seat?"

Our first stop is my regular coffee shop.
For no good reason at all I decided that it would be a most natural thing to place some shaving gear on the table. Very casually.
Now, the restroom door in the backdrop was obviously completely intentional as it adds that je ne sais quoi factor and truly elevates the viewing experience to a multi-dimensional/level artistic rendering on current affairs. Might I dare say it's a political statement. It's in the end up to you - the viewer.
But it is.

Next. Lunch.
Now, this might be a hard image for many people to watch. But it's real. It's hard. It's in your face.
It's two chicken tacos - and somewhere in the background a rather lovely waitress with a very confused look on her face.

Up next is a short BART ride (that's Bay Area Rapid Transit) for you non NorCalers (pfft, SoCal, don't even get me started...).
Most likely due to the still relatively early Saturday morning, there's an apparent lack of pigeons, purse snatchers and McDonald bags. Give it a couple of hours though.
Notice the leading lines here. I saw that and thought of you and how that would truly enhance the message. Ok, so I just noticed it. That's how real this is.

The BART safely delivered me to downtown SF, Market street.
As I pulled the shave gear out of my bag I started to feel like, I think, Mr celestino (see photo ontop) must feel when he struggles to find that perfect time of the day when the light is just right. Luckily for me it was noon and what light is better than full light? Look and learn Mr celestino. Look and learn.
Now, I would have waited for a street car to appear and have that as a backdrop as people really seem to like street cars. I don't know why though - they're really slow and full of tourists from Michigan.
But, as I take this photo there's a really lovely gentleman standing riiight behind me asking me if I got any spare change and/or if I know what's wrong with his leg - so I snapped the shot, gave him a dollar bill and decided that I was ill equipped to deliver any medical advice apart from the obvious "if it hurts, try to rub some dirt on it". Worked for my back.

Fast forward a bit and I'm down by the Embarcadero/Ferry building having met up with a lovely lady.
She knows me pretty well by now so didn't even flinch when I carefully assembled the bowl, razor and brush. She muttered something in Japanese which I always think sounds adorable even though I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want a translation.
The janitor mop in the background is highly intentional. It's a statement.

Finally, my favorite image of these solid gems - holding up the bowl and gear in my hand as the MUNI train passes by the Bay Bridge while most people in the rather crowded train does their best to try to ignore it all. Well, especially me.

Only one thing left to do....

Hi there,

What, no pics of you walking around the Tenderloin? Maybe a shot of you shaving a homeless man (or woman) would be nice.

Martin

Well, technically the shot on Market street is just a couple of blocks from the Tenderloin and homeless people could be found within razor-throwing distance. One of my favorite places for Phở is in the Tenderloin - maybe I'll snap some photos there one day :)

I keep thinking I really should take some of my razors out into the wild for some photographs, but Im kind of worried about damaging them... Not at all worried that people will think Im some sort of nutter, no, not at all.
