Where have all the Gillette Adjustables Gone?

Some of the ebay exuberant pricing is to create a false reference point for potential buyers, then sell them the same (above) normally priced product elsewhere (for example on gumtree) as a great deal. If uneducated buyer or an eager collector bites for the ebay dummy auction, even better.

The only eBay prices worth anything as data are the "sold for" prices. Even then, what you do is average out the five or ten lowest. But no doubt what you say happens - there are some ridiculous prices for "rare" razors but you'd have to be retarded to pay them.

So your saying the Gillette Old is the best?
But I just like the look of the Slim Adjustable... And I think 5 razors would look better than 4... Don't you think.... (tee hee hee)

Have to agree. Odd amounts look better on display, So 5 or 7 or 9 etc. All the way up to i have too much stuff. :)

I've bought good sets from a seller who sets prices FAAARRR too high, but will accept 50-60% of what they asked for.

I'm not too proud to admit it caught me out the first time - went in probably £10 higher than I'd have liked to, but still way below asking price, expecting to just find out what their bottom line was. It was accepted with no further discussion.

Absolutely agree many a deal had when originally none was thought to be had. If you don't ask or offer you have nothing.

Dumb question. Is there an easy way to see sold for prices across a range of listing or do you have to track individual items until the auction finishes?
Search the term you are looking for ie. GILLETTE FATBOY in eBay, then use the filter button and click "sold" slider. It will show you finished auctions and what they sold for

You can still pick up good deals on eBay if you know what you're looking for and are prepared to trawl through lots of dross uncovered using less than obvious search words — like "old shaver" or "user razor". It's not guaranteed to work first time, but maybe on the second, third, fourth, or...

True especially in England. Reasonably priced ones appear to be few and far between. They can be sourced on EBay, but like other members have said once you factor in shipping is it worth the punt ? Also I noticed you need to look at images very carefully. On a few occasions I have seem Gillette Slim adjustables advertised as Fatboys. I can only assume this is because Fatboy razors command a premium. This is my current collection

  1. Fatboy -1958
  2. Slim - 1964
  3. Super Adjustable (aka Black Beauty with metal base plate) -1969
  4. Super Adjustable ( aka Black Beauty with plastic base plate) - 1980

Can't explain it but I just like the shave customisation an adjustable affords. Only other Adjustable I would like to add is the Merkur Mergress, but these appear to be as rare as rocking horse droppings in the UK.
