Phoenix&Beau: My vegan & tallow shaving soaps [testers required]

Scents.

I do not have a good nose although I enjoy nice scents. I cannot usually analyse a compound scent into individual components. But here are my views.

1. Initial lemon note but a deeper earthy scent beneath is a bit too strong for my tastes.
2. Citrus/wood/lavender. Nice!
3. Heady floral. A bit sweet for me.
4. Some menthol in this? A cool pleasant scent. Excellent for a shaving soap I would think.
5. Woods with maybe Eucalyptus. Too antiseptic for me.
6. Definite favourite. 'Arabian' scent. Earthy spice. Quite like Meissner Tremonia 'Morrocan Rhassoul'.

I would buy a soap scented 2, 4 or (definitely) 6. The others wouldn't move me.

number two is the standout one for me, is it lime?
Lime is the predominant scent, yes. There's also lemon, mandarin, litsea cubeba, bergamot and sweet orange to name a few more that make up the fragrance :)

How did you find the others and are you able to put them in an order of preference / would - wouldn't enjoy in a shaving soap, please?

Afternoon all,

I hope you've all enjoyed the scent samples I sent and that @missingskin is now free of his cold / able to assess them. When you've a moment could you give feedback on them, please. The data from @Fergiebilly @Stuart @globalm @Nico1970 @SeanC has helped me determine a running order of how I'm likely to schedule the release of my scents; so far it is Citra Royale, Sanskrit and Solaris [in that order]. Your feedback is important and so far has been fascinating to read.

I've enjoyed three shaves with Vegan V8.2 and it's definitely a step in the right direction; cushion and post-shave is much improved from V7. Running parallel to vegan is my tallow (with shea & lanolin) project and, if you're all happy, I think I'll send samples of both for the next phase of testing.

FAO the below testers, Gents if you could let me have your thoughts (order of preference, what you detect in each scent and if the strength is too strong or too weak) I'd be indebted.
@isaiah53
@fly3k
@grarea
@missingskin
@Hippo
@mouse
@Nishy (yours are in the post, my friend)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend,

Kerry.

I did post my thoughts. Not had chance to smell them much since but did put a dab of no 4 on my wrist the other day. Nice citrus scent.
Yep, all seen @fly3k thank you. If you've the time though what I'd be really grateful for is something like what @Fergiebilly and others have done. It's this detail that will help steer which scents I'll be releasing first. This is what @Fergiebilly had to say:
I have done my Happy Sniffing...:D

  1. Lavandula Starts off with a Strong Orange high note and low Lavender note...It settles into a higher Lavender/Lower Orange note
  2. Citra Royale Starts of with a lovely lemon & lime note..Just want to eat it...Settles into a distinct Citrus Lime High note
  3. Albion Deep Grassy natural morning dew high note ...Settles into a hint of vanilla with musky earth middle note
  4. Sanskrit High Cedar wood with low citrus note....Settles into Lovely Musky Note with a high citrus note
  5. Boudicea High Peppermint Note ...Settles quite nicely and to very refreshing & cool Spearmint
  6. Solaris. Dark Musky Arabian or Oriental scent...Settles into a Lighter Musky scent....A Mans scent for sure...:D:D

2. Was my favourite for a shaving soap....Refreshing
5. Also a great scent for a shaving soap...Refreshing
1. Could go with this in a shaving soap.....Refreshing
4. Nice & balanced and good to go in a shaving soap ...Refreshing
3. For me...A bit rich for a shaving soap...More like a perfume for me..
6. Again a bit complex and rich for a shaving soap....But hell I would wear it as a mans perfume...Lovely...o_O

To sum up then..2, 5, 1 & 4 are refreshing and very balanced.....3 & 6 were quite earthy & musky and quite strong...Lovely scents but maybe too much for a shaving soap for me anyway...Subtle is not here...:eek:

Well good morning gentlemen. I have had what was quite possibly one of my best shaves ever. Version 8.3 was a dense creamy cloud of silk :)

My skin is extremely sensitive and I completed 3 passes for BBS with no nicks or wheepers. Post shave was very nice also.

I'll send samples after a week or so; I'd like to see how it cures as post HP process it's quite a soft finish.

In other news, if you haven't popped it on the thread, may I have your feedback on my scents, please.

With kind regards,

Kerry.

Had a sniff over a 3 hour period with the scents. A couple of nice ones. I do smell the notes you listed earlier and my order of preference is:
6, 5, 2, 1, 4, 3

3 smells very similar to JD honey whisky and had a bad experience. 2 smells like starburst limes. I do like both but would probably not buy 5.

Many thanks @Nishy interesting that you placed Boudicea in 2nd place but probably wouldn't go for it as a purchase. Re number 3 (Albion) it's heavily scented with sandalwood and has (along with several more essential oils) a quantity (though not too much) of benzoin and ylang ylang. That's your sweetness right there and I think we all have a certain fragrance that triggers bad drinking memories :D:eek: Mine is sweet orange and whiskey, aka Southern Comfort.. :eek:

Thanks again for your feedback.

Whilst version V8.3 is curing* can I have a last call for scent feedback, please. Your comments are very important to me and I'd like to hear what you think about the six scents.
@grarea
@missingskin (hope the cold's better ;))
@Hippo
@mouse

Have you managed to have a sniff?
*I'm pencilling next Monday (the 30th) as sending you all your next test samples.

My findings for the scent test:

Lavandula - Of course Lavender, but I could also smell peppermint
Citra Royale - Citrus, lemon, lime, orange and maybe mint
Albion - Aniseed and sandlewood
Sanskirt - sandlewood, citrus and cinnomon
Boudicea - Spearmint and menthol - I found this one hard
Solaris - This was hard but I could smell musk but it be a fresh musk??

As in my order of preference I am not sure of yet but they all have very high qualities which would be great in any soap.

I like my soap to be very strong in scent so the wife can smell it afterwards ;)

Thanks

Stuart
Hi @Stuart did you figure out an order of preference, in the end?

Thanks,

Kerry.

@missingskin that's magic, many thanks. Now go and rest that olfactory equipment of yours.. :)
@Stuart thanks also and that's real good of you to say that you think they're all "top quality scents". You wouldn't believe how much of a rabbit hole scent work is. It's a whole other game.. :eek: but, along with my soap making, I love it. :p

And to let you know how the scents are scoring so far;
  1. Citra Royale (44pts)
  2. Solaris (32)
  3. Sanskrit (27)
  4. Lavandula (23)
  5. Albion (23)
  6. Boudicea (22)
For me at least this is all fascinating stuff. With my scents I recognise that fragrance is hugely subjective and that you'll not always please everyone. That's fine because my emphasis is on creating interesting and unusual scents and, in time, creating my own versions of the time old classics, e.g. an 1800's leather formula based on Cuir De Russia; Fougere Imperial and the classic Chypre's. That's to begin with but first things first.. nail down my formula :cool:. I'm really encouraged by V8.3; I'll have two possibly three more shaves with it before getting it to you all for stringent testing.

Very grateful for all of your help with this chaps, I'm glad you've all enjoyed it so far. I certainly have.

Kerry.
