Aftershave recommendations

Hi guys,

So I have been reading the aftershave reviews - without wanting to sound too negative, they all seem to be recommended...

However, knowing that I have quite 'sensitive' skin, which I for example can only ever use non oil based moisturizers on - could anyone point towards specific AS for me?

Having a history of skin probs I can't use anything alcohol based Billy. My previous standby was Trumper's glycerine based Skin Food, which is pricey (in my world anyway) but you only need a teeny amount & the large bottle lasts well leaving a comfortaable, rehydrated & soothed feeling on the skin. Recently I've also had great success with Martin's (Prof Blighty) witch hazel based aftershave splash (witch hazel has always worked well with my very oily skin) and also with his Balsaam ( blend of very light oils, however not at all oily in consistency). I mention Martin's products both because they can come lightly fragranced if you prefer an A/S which can have your signature scent and also because you can drop him a pm & he'll take any skin sensitivities you have into consideration when mixing a potion just for you. (The "mates' rates" which he, Sunbury, Artisan & other soapmakers give to TSR members is also worth mentioning).

It probably an ingredient that your skin reacts to. Unfortunately it is really hard to pinpoint what that ingredient is, trial and error is the only to find what you like and what works for you.

I would recommend getting a a few samples from Connaught to try before investing in a big bottle.

Usually. Usually it's fragrance that causes some sensitivity, sometimes alcohol.

Start with something neutral like plain witch hazel and see if that works for you as a basic cleanser/astringent post shave.

I then apply either an AS or AB over my still wet with witch hazel chops which reduces the potency and therefore possibility of any adverse reaction.

That works for me as well reducing the amount of product I use but you'll have to experiment.

Oh, sorry the ebay link does not seem to work :shave

so you first use the witch hazel and then an aftershave? which after shave do you use then?

well i also have very sensitive skin, prone to breakouts, razor burn and rashes if even slightly provoked.

yet i get on very very well with Taylor Of Olf Bond Streets aftershaves... specifically, eton college and st james. As long as ive done a good job with my shave and havent hacked away at my face, they go on with a refreshing tingle, and leave my skin feeling smooth, tight and smooth.

they are also good cheap options.

L'Occitane Verdon is very very mild, not marketed as an after shave per se, they call it a "refreshing face splash" and you can indeed use it on the whole face it's that mild. Nice light fragrance too.
One member here has reported a "sticky" feeling afterwards but it's not a problem I've encountered.

Don't get preoccupied with using a particular AS or AB, just find something cheap and cheerful on the high street.

I'd agree with all of that. I've got a sensitive skin and use Trumpers Lime Skin food followed up with either Prof Blighty coconut AS or SunburyBoy's Bay Rum AS. I haven't had any problems with any of these products.

Billy,

I was the same a good while back. No end of problems and "sensitive skin" etc

Turns out I didn't really have sensitive skin, brushed up my technique a bit and took antdad's advice. He advised me to try an AS splash instead of using balms. Pretty much since then I can count the amount of times I've used a non-alcohol based balm on one hand.

Yes an AS will sting a bit if you've had a ropey shave but it's more like a short sharp shock. 2 mins after applying an aftershave, my face feels great. I also use witch hazel. I have tried some different ones but I have settled on Thayers Medicated Superhazel but that it just to my taste. Bog standard witch hazel will do just as well but the Thayers products are something for you to look into. I got mine from a website called iHerb.

As antdad says, start with some cold water and witch hazel first then work from there. The AS offered from Superdrug (own brand) work very well especially at only about £2.50 a bottle and if you dont like it then it doesn't break the bank.

Pick up as many free samples as you can, L’OCCITANE, Body Shop, Crabtree & Evelyn will allow you to take a small sample pot out the door. Exercise the gift of the gab and some of the samples are big enough to get you through a couple of weeks.

T&H + GFT offer sample packs that include their respective aftershave “Balms”, the T&H pack being very agreeable.

For splashes id recommend like others already have the use of the samples offered by Paul at Connaught, with Speick being the first one id recommend.
