I used to be young and very fit. I'm now older, very unfit and carrying too much weight.
A long time ago I used to swim 20 consecutive lengths during my lunch break and still have time to comfortably eat my sandwiches, I also completed a 10 mile fun run in a little over 100 mins.
Nowadays a brisk walk up my stairs dramatically increases my heart rate and leaves me breathing quite hard. I have very little energy or motivation to do the things I used to enjoy and I recently struggled to swim seven lengths with breaks in between.
On Monday this week I started the journey back to a fiitter me with a 15min walk on the treadmill, Tuesday 20mins and yesterday 40mins.
Some research via Youtube introduced me to the "Couch to 5Km" program. Which has inspired me to make some changes, I can't get any younger but I can get some of that fitness back.
As I'm starting from such a poor level of fitness, my plan is to continue with the walking until the end of May and then start an 8-!0 week training plan with a target of doing a 5Km run on or before the 6th Aug. The stretch target is to do it under 30mins.
I have some cheap running shoes and socks on the way, while I get fit enough to run, then I'll be off to the local Runners shop for a "gait analysis" and will invest in the correct running shoes. I also have a fitness tracker type watch on order, so I can monitor my progress and add some science to my training in a bid to maximise my effort.
