Chubby 1 v Duke 3

Hi all,

Can anyone confirm that the 2 brushes in the title are the same knot with a different handle or have I read up something that's been made up by someone on the other site?

Thanks all,

Dipesh

Of course, I get what you mean by 'similar'.

I thought they may have varied in density or something to make them a bit different.

Yeah I should have phrased then question better in asking if the Characteristics are the same n

I guess Tony answered that one!

Probably out of date and incomplete but this is a guide:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.emsplace.com/simpson_brush_measurements.htm">http://www.emsplace.com/simpson_brush_measurements.htm</a><!-- m -->

As for knots:

Look at the differences of some brush head shapes here for the same brushes:

It's what hand made brushes are all about.

Cricket's a bit dull!

I have seen several times the Duke knot measured at 25mm.

It sounds logic to me as the Duke#2 is 22mm, then a one mm improvement from the Duke#2 to the #3 would not be enough to really differentiate the two.

Thanks Peter, that superior shave site is dangerous!

Cyril, I have a duke 2 and 3, the knot is bigger by more then 1mm for sure!

May have to go for a Chubby 2 I think so that it's quite different to my other 2 simpsons.

OK so you 're looking for a chubby to complete your brush set up ?

Consider the two band super badger. It is a really nice grade very different from the best and the super three band.

I have a chubby#1 with this hair grade : It is a perfect face lathering brush. Very very well made. To see how dense and well shaped the knot is in itself worth the buy should you care enough about brush craftsmanship. It is so dense that bowl lathering is almost unpractical but should you load long enough the brush on a soap puck and face lather it is marvelous : A tremendous backbone with very soft tips. It really feels like a silver tip badger unlike the other Simpson hair grades. If you want to bowl lather try another brush style it will be different from the Dukes in best and worth the price IMHO.

I also have a Chubby#2 super badger three band : It is surprisingly practical at least for me. I expected something excessive I would have used from time to time. In fact, the knot is so dense and short (I have chosen the super over the best on the assumption that it would be denser) that it does not splay much. My 177 shavemac splays more and feels as large with its 23mm knot due to its long loft.
Obviously one have to load it heavily and it uses a little more product but it is a convenient brush, it feels more like a pad than a painting brush on the face. The hair is not soft, it feels like a best badger hair grade so combined with the density it provides a very efficient massage.
Bowl lathering works fine.
What I like the most with this brush is that once loaded you can re lather ad vitam eternam : It comes in handy when I proceed with my touch up, just the Chubby in my right hand and the razor in the left until my shave is close enough.

You phrased the question perfectly well Dipesh, its just that Simpson can't make two nearly identical knots even if they tried, I found this out from personal experience. Anyhow if I had a Duke 3 in Best and I was looking for a Chubby I definitely wouldn't bother with CH1, I'd just opt for CH2 in 2 band super and specify a short loft.

It is a real shame that you think this of today's Simpson brushes.
My son has been invited to their factory on the Isle of Man - he will be there this week. I am sure he will let me know his thoughts after his trip.

If you look at this link <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://thesuperiorshave.com/Simpsons_Brushes.html">http://thesuperiorshave.com/Simpsons_Brushes.html</a><!-- m --> that fido posted you can see how different each knot is in the same model.

Yes I have seen some of the photos of Simpson brushes on various sites and yes I agree there are visible differences. I will see what Gary has to say after his visit this week. He has a good eye for knots (better eyesight than me as well!) and I am sure he will be checking out all areas during his trip and letting me know what the current brushes being made are looking like.

I have no problem with brush variations, just as long as you get what you think you ordered. I bought a Thater brush listed with a loft of 52mm. I was sent one with a loft of 48mm. A 4mm loft difference makes it an entirely different brush. A difference of perhaps 2mm or less is acceptable but not much more.

I think most users accept small variations that should make quality handmade items what they are, what is not acceptable is the excessive variability in knot shape, density and loft that does occasionally occur with Simpson. As Peter said given the differences in performance this can affect it isn't quaint or unique it's just plain careless.
