Cold water shaving tips?

Cold water for me, winter or summer. Go for it!

The counter-argument to hot water prep is that cold water makes the hair more brittle and hence cuts easier with said razor.

I don't buy that personally and I'm happy enough shaving with either hot or cold water. Water is the constant here.

to me it smacks too much of penance!

Meh! I find cold water works best if I am lashing myself with a cat of nine tales at the same time. The bleeding from the whip is nothing a styptic pencil can't fix.
