Costa Coffee:

"A rich, full-flavoured coffee with a velvety, smooth texture; our Flat White would stand out even without it's distinctive hand-finished pattern."

I just tried this for the first time.

Loved it.

Flat white is an elusive beastie at the moment, 20 different cafés will serve you 20 different drinks and call them all flat whites. The way I was shown (by an Aussie no less :D ) is two shots of strong espresso plus equal volume steamed milk and NO foam...hence flat.

I've seen everything from cappucini to weird americano hybrids going by this name. I think what Costa are doing is labelling a correctly made latte as a Flat White, which leaves us what make good latte anyway in a confusing place...

And that's the coffee rant for the day. Out and about I only drink espresso, so that I can simultaneously seem like a snob and a badass ;)

I agree, it's a relabelling job. Double espresso with steamed milk no or very little foam is what I make most mornings.

Fido the espresso machine beckons.

Well, whatever it was, the one I had in Wimborne was delicious.

I had a double shot espresso in Lymington this morning. Still playing around with my latest filter coffee maker at home. Not sure where this is all going.

'scuse my being a peasant....but I usually ask for a strong white coffee with an extra shot of Espresso....either that or a double espresso if the old brain cells need a bit of a kick.....

That sounds very nice though Peter....I must try one of those if /when I come across one...

Peter, you have started posting in this section so you know exactly where it is going :D It's a slippery slope!

I am coming to the conclusion that the coffee I prepare for myself is pretty much a flat white. I don't bother pouring the foam on the top of mine anymore, plus I use a Moomin mug which is nothing like a latte glass.
