Gillette new or old?

I currently have a merkur 42 (closed comb) which is marketed as a copy of the original gillette safety razor. Would that be a gillette old or a new? How much are olds and news likely to sell for? Will they take DE blades available today? What is the difference between the two and is the Merkur similar in its shave? I am tempted by the idea of getting an open comb razor, I love the retro look of the 42 and am weighing up the open comb Merkur 41 or a gillette open comb, (not likely to buy soon depends on whether its something I would have to save up for or not).

Do not know Merkur, as i only use vintage DE's. The English New is one of my favourites. The American ones are great to start with, nice mild shavers. The English New is more aggressive.

They say it's a copy of the '04. That would be the open comb one. But a little while before Merkur came out with it I picked up this one on eBay . Is it a Gillette handle? The head is a 1920 something. But it does look like the Merkur ? Before it came out!
