Lord Platinums

Used a Lord Platinum (Egypt) for the first time this morning. These blades normally get a good review for sharpness etc, so I was a bit dismayed when I started to shave to find the blade dragging almost as badly as a Derby. However, surprisingly, after the first pass, this improved and I ended up with a really close and comfortable shave. Don't know if this is how the blades normally are, or if that was just a one off in the pack. Will try a few more this week, really like them.

I don't mind Lord blades but there are certainly better ones. I've found what you found with a few different blades though, the first 2 strokes have been 'rough' but the blade then settles down and the rest of the shave is good.

I retried a new Lord blade this morning and got halfway through, removed it and put my favourite Super Max Blue Diamond back in - what a difference.
Blades DO matter!!!

Victor, I will agree 100% the Blue Diamonds are much better, in fact they are my favourite blade at the moment (good job as I have 700 of them!)

Have you tried the Feathers that many say are better?
I will eventually try them but the Blue Diamonds are for me the TOPS so far.

Feathers are the bees knees but won't suit everyone. I use Feathers most days with a Merkur Futur set at 3, which is quite an agressive combination. I do 3 passes and end with a bit of buffing of the difficult bits to get a BBS 95% of the time. Having been wet shaving all my life, my skin can obviously handle this 7 days a week. However, I'd certainly recommend going quite slowly using the Feather, as it's quite easy to end up with an extra mouth in places you don't really need.

I must admit that I am still using my 1908 Gillette which is lovely to use and very forgiving.
I am also looking around for another DE razor, and EJ87 looks attractive. I do not have a 'heavy' growth so a mild-ish razor probably suits me the most.
Its blades I am experimenting with to a certain extent.
Have tried the blades from Boots, Tesco, Wilkinson Blacks, Dorco, Astra, Wilkinson Blue, Laser, and a couple of other makes, but the Blue Diamonds seem to suit the most, with never a problem.
I am off to Germany for a wee holiday (vacation!!) so I am going to look at the specialist shaving shops they have over there.
Looking at the forum here, I have come to the conclusion that a Merkur would be too aggressive for me, but still undecided.
I also keep looking for a Gillette slim which I think will also suit the bill. But I must say they would have to go some to beat my 1908 Gillette!!

I've used feathers but they are not better for me and they are a LOT more expensive than the Blue Diamonds.

I think you are right about the Blue Diamonds. They are really great blades and at such a good price.

Not to hijack the thread (much) but I found Blue Diamonds smooth and good for two shaves (thorough, three-pass + touch-ups) but the stubble grew back a lot three or four hours later so not that close. But can't argue with the price and still a reasonable blade, just not really great.

I've ordered 50 of the Blue Diamonds as they're just so darned cheap and will compare them to the 10 Astra SPs I've got to use in my first DE razor, a Gillette Superspeed. Will use the Astras up first then try these. 50 blades for the less than the price of 5 Mach 3 blades!

With blades that are a bit tuggy on the first pass but then get better, have you
considered hand stropping the blade before use. It may just clean up the
microscopic rough edge so it's smooth from pass one. YMM.... Blah...Blah..! :icon_cheesygrin:

Good thinking. I'll try that tomorrow or Sunday.
