Day 4 - Shave #1
It must have been almost two years since I last used a Merkur 37C. Back then I didn't see the benefit it gave over other razors. I also had discovered SE razors and they are still what I now use most. The 37C arrived just after I had a shave with the Bunny V3. I don't need a shave the next day if I use the Bunny. I decided to push it a bit further and use the Merkur 37C with three days worth of stubble.
Proper prep was called for, so I used the Lucky Tiger facial cleanser and removed it with a hot face towel.
PolSilvers are my default DE blades, so I used a fresh one. As with all pass around razors I decided on my standard four pass WTG/XTG/GTX/ATG routine. This razor is a slant with a twisted blade and the way to shave with those razors is to forget that they are slants. Shave as normal, use the correct angle and use NO PRESSURE.
The feel of the razor on my face was rather pleasant. I never had the impression that it was out to cut me. Quite tame, but very efficient. I was presentable after the first pass.
I started DE shaving with a Merkur 34C, which has the same handle as the 37C and I was always happy with the handle of these razors and dismissed claims that the handle is too short and that the 39C is the better razor. I was wrong. The handle is too short and uncomfortable. Then again, the handle of the bakelite Merkur 45 is the same length and it is perfect. I need to think about this some more.
The shave was very close and lasted quite long. Not up there with the best, but still very good. Alum block and ASL had very little to tell me - it was not a harsh shave at all. I'll skip another shave and either shave with my Merkur 34C in two days time or with both the Merkur 34C and the 37C so I can judge the difference the slant makes.
