Well, I think they can be better, but today I changed the group head gasket + when I didn't (over)fill the filter, I got a decent but not yet good shot:

I'd love to have a cup of your coffee Mikael.

I have simply bought myself a new filter coffee maker and arranged to get some samples of some different fresh ground coffee as my first step in trying to improve my home brewed coffee.

Thank you Peter and I would love to have over for one! I'm happy you decided to take that road, many tings to discover, I remember when I first got some high quality beans - I made a cup at the time, with a filter over that cup... it was African beans and I got a caffeine kick every time (in a good way though :)). It was over 10 years ago and I just checked if they still was around, they are and the guy running the show was one crazy dude, as you can clearly read on the site, but his coffee was to die for (ask for fresh rosted if you order some) :D

The place I will be starting my research will be a shop which offers tasting sessions to sample freshly brewed coffee made from freshly ground beans of your choice. Seems like a good way of selecting some beans which they can then grind for me to try at home. And of course they will offer advice on coffee making, including equipment, depending on how far you want to go.

On the subject of shops selling coffee there use to be a specialist shop in Southampton. They had a fully operating roasting machine in the window and roast coffee on a daily basis. The smell was incredible, it filled the street. They would grind you what ever you wanted and of course to what ever grade.

Sadly such places are near enough extinct these days, or the market is so much smaller for people with more taste than the supermarket shelves.

Well the coffee roaster Market I really would not say is smaller. Has moved away from the high street but there is a lot of them online, who have real premises some where and the majority of them roast your beans to order.

Is it wrong that I like my coffee the same as my shaving?

I bung some coffee in 300ml French Press, add hot water, stir, wait, press, pour, drink.

Are you all home-roasting and grinding too?

Looks and sounds like lots of fun.

/not being sarcastic for a change

Cheers Slicko and Vinnie!

No, no roasting (except from the kids and wife). Grinding yes, I think you could buy an cheapish grinder and grind beans for your French press, prob would add to the flavors...

It's a lot of fun, depending on your sense of humor I guess, but it gives a nice satisfaction to draw a nice cappu, a clean espresso shot or a divine latte, at home :D

You aren't alone Vinny. I generally use a French Press (or make a filter if for more than 1) or a stove top Moka if I fancy something a little stronger.

I have ground my own beans at home in the past however the other half lost the lid for my grinder and it is now useless.

Don't get me wrong if I had the cash/time I'd probably have a proper coffee machine however I go with what is most convenient.

I drink quite a bit of coffee everyday. Right now I'll alternating between a stovetop Vacuum Pot; a stovetop All Glass Percolator; and a Electric Drip. All of there were preowned and reasonable purchased . I have a hand grinder metal plate type and a variable grind electric. The most expensive part of the operation is the coffee.
I use French presses occasionally ; taste fine but they seem to use a lot of coffee for the return. Now looking for an expresso maker that won't take up too much space.

I've been roasting my own recently...and it is fun.

cordless drill, largeish tin can, nut and bolt, heat source. laser thermometer (helps)

Kudos Tony! That's really taking control over all things involved :). I've got no roasting plans, what so ever, but I can think it adds to the experience in a very satisfying way.

Cheers Brine! Sure's nice when it fall together like that. I'm waiting some more though, until my next naked portafilter try (until I get my favorite beans and some more time).
