Ideologies (remember Socialism, anyone? Or Thatcherism? Or any other Big Idea, for that matter? Remember when political parties were different? When people had hopes and dreams and values and visions and - in short - beliefs. Marches and magazines and debates.)
Vinyl. 7" and 12", 45 and 33 & 1/3
Indie Music. Now everything is free and/or owned by an arm of one of the Big Four companies. But I loved flexidiscs and mixtapes and fanzines and genuinely independent record labels (there's three words! "independent" + "record" + "labels" - all gone or going). Remember finding a band and sharing their music, being part of a scene, a really (often literally) underground subculture - the sense of effort (finding out, disseminating, joining) and the concomitant satisfaction at that.
Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven!
And finally John Peel. Curator and cross-pollinator of music by, for and of the people.
