Unpressurised double basket update

To replace the strange one gaggia supply...

Well first same tamp same grind....whoosh coffee runs out quicker...
so it will need tighter grind and a slightly firmer tamp I think.
Secondly no early blonding, no big foamy bubbles that I sometimes get.
A smoother more consistent crema...
Interesting I wonder why gaggia fit the others...? More experimentation needed but already it looks promising...

RE: Unpressurised double basket first use

Non dear AD
Its the 5 quid from the espresso shop Glasgow.
I bought it because it is straight sided like the VST one though.
Quality looks OK too.
Must make more coffee.......

It's funny how different, different filters can be. My naked filter's a bitch to get a good shot from (you need to tamp _much_ looser with that one). I took some pics this weekend :icon_rolleyes::

Less pressure and same grind... I could prob try and get the grind finer and press harder, but I seem to have solved the ratio with lighter tamping...

Ok have lavazza beans in situ now producing a round coffee house style.

The machine is runnig a lot more freely with the new basket and I would note;
Crema deffo of a more consistent quality.
Feel in the mouth smoother.
Shots easier to adjust and manage as the flow is more consistent from the PF.
I get an even flow each time from both sides of the double spout.
I am tamping a little firmer.
Pucks are consistently dry and firm.

My wife commented without knowing about the change in basket commenting that the coffee was 'really ervy nice this morning'!
Ah Happy wife.
Nice lady.
This has been a very worthwhile £5!!

Dear AD,
yes i think so from the same place I got the double.
I am going to try some more shots later!!
I don't know what it is with my Gaggia but if I even slightly 'overfill' the single basket it has a problem locking into place.
I stick with the double and that way I am leaving out a few variables too..
Do you have a Classic??

Tim

Update!!!

have made small adjustments to grind and I am getting proper tiger striping in my pour!!! It was Ok before but now it is Fab.
taste is bigger, rounder and fuller.
Ha ha!!
Lavazza beans from Tesco BTW....

Crap they (gaggia) should not use the pressurised basket and the plastic widget when it is so much easier and better tasting a la naturele.
My daughter did the honours today. Fantastic pour.
It is ten times easier to get good results with this set up.
In retrospect I feel I have been fighting the machine a little.
Onwards....
New beans from Rioba coming soon.... The platinum variety...

Yes I did!!
New basket. Widget gone.
Results way way better.
Slightly finer grind and less tamp.
All good.
I get a regular pour from both sides of the spout!
Cheers
Tim.
