Have you got what it takes to reach mount doom and destroy the one ring? (Or if you are @Satanfriendly get there and back again a few times :))

One Does Not Simply Lord Of The Rings GIF

Join this year's challenge to find out.
This one is going to work better if you have a compatible Garmin device as there is a very cool little app that you install to track your progress. It doesn't matter if you don't as you can still track the progress until you reach the total of 2896km or if you prefer freedom units - 1800 miles.

It's a long one but if two hobbits can do it whilst being hunted by all manner of horrors then I'm sure we can too.

i cant do this lord of the rings GIF

Sign up on this thread if you are interested, there will be another thread to track progress as we reach each milestone.

App Description

With this widget you can travel with Frodo and Sam to Mount Doom to destroy the Ring!

Stay motivated as you walk 2896 km / 1800 miles and discover 66 unique milestones, as seen in the books and movies, along your journey. Most milestones include some general information about the places and events that take place there.

This widget uses your daily steps and pace to calculate the distance you travel each day. This works even if you don't start an activity.
Here is how it looks on my watch, Day 1:

You need to install the app to your Garmin device using their app store.
You can do it through Garmin Express on windows and mac or using Connect IQ through your phone. Just search for 'Frodo' and it will find it.

Download Garmin Express here:
And or Garmin Connect IQ from the play store:
Or Apple Store:

I read this post this morning before I went to work. I like the idea, and have been thinking about it on and off through the day. I don't have any garmin devices though, sadly. I do a fair bit of walking at work and wonder if that would sort of be cheating. Today my phone tells me I've done 26,000 steps and I wonder how many miles that would equate to. One relevant factor is that I have short Hobbitesque legs.

You could measure a step and calculate it from that. It doesn't look like there is any interest so I will be off to Mordor on my todd :)
I had a couple of jars in The Green Dragon yesterday and I am 36km away from Green Hill Country in Tookland. No sign of that Gandalf fella yet.

A challenge? Bring it on.

Definitely in for this one and I'll tag it on to the end of the other as I still continue my way. If work didn't get in the way now and then I was hoping to have 6000km under my belt , but settled for 5500.

1800 miles? Here I come

I do have a GPS now but need to find out if it cam be linked in.

Don't worry Hobits Satan is behind you to defeat, we'll I guess, Satan.

And on my way. A bit of a mild start but 24.6 miles is better than a zero.

It took the Hobbits 6 years, 3 films and a cast of thousands to make the journey. Hope to be a bit quicker and 6 to 8 months being wishful.

Lonely, try doing it with the ring around your neck and tiny legs with massive feet :D
I am still doing it, and my last port of call was Woody End after 51km - I spotted a few chaps on horses, the riders dressed in black, looking a bit shifty, I think they are up to no good. Luckily a group of Elves were nearby, and the riders scarpered.

Next stop - Woodhall at the weirdly precise distance of 65.98Km.

Over quarter of the way there and no turning back from Mordor now. Go burn in Hell Satan. Oh again? In my own house?

Taken a bit longer to get this far than I anticipated but August was more walking than cycling and throw more work than I expected. But getting there.

The horizon is changing. Darker skies are moving across. It can only be Mordor and Mount Doom.....or Bootle

Frodo Challenge - 589.20miles

I reckon completion sometime around February or March next year. I am sure it didn't take the bloody Hobbits that long, but hey ho.

And for some reason I still continue the 1000Km challenge which finished ages ago. This evening saw me to 6442.66Km, better known in English money as 4003.25 miles. Broke the 4000 mile barrier. Not too bad for something which only required 1000K

13th September - 19.31Km (cycle)

Progress held up due to tug driving, but back on my way. Bet the Hobits never had to put up with having to work. At least I am over the one third mark

Over in Yorkshire at the moment and a couple of photos of the Hudson Way between Market Weighton and Beverley

17.5 miles of this today. Wonderful

An update from the solo Hobit. All I have following me is some slimy creature who eats raw fish and keeps muttering about 'My precious'. I have told my wife I don't know how many times to go home.

Okay, half way it is and just over the 900 mile mark. Taken a tad over 3 months to get this far so I assume should finish the full distance somewhere in February next year, but I expect the winter will slow things down a bit.

So get me right. I have to now chuck a ring in to a volcano, turn around, and go the 900 miles back home? What a pointless journey for a bit of jewellery flinging. Better tell the missus I'll be a little late home for dinner.

9th October - 22.53Km
11th October - 31.93Km
12th October - 22.69Km
13th October - 33.31Km
14th October - 5.63Km (walk)
14th October - 21.02Km
15th October - 30.58Km
16th October - 22.85Km

Frodo Challenge - 905.01miles

Also close to another milestone on the 1000Km challenge from last year which I still churn away on.

All this is certainly keeping me well in another sense, as now nearly 14 months at my new found weight and keeping my ex-diabetes type two exactly as being that, ex. A massive win win
