Now i'm not into watches at all, but i did get one bought for me at christmas by my aunt and uncle, it is a Casio Super Illuminator, it is still in it's box, it comes with a resin/rubber strap, don't like that at all, but i would like to put a brown leather strap on it, is this easy to do, and looks ok with a leather strap doesn't it.....for a cheap watch i mean...?

This has been my every day and only watch for the past 2 years, it's been put through it's paces with only a slightly scratched lens to show.

Although the plastic strap wasn't to my liking it's stood the test as well.

I like that what model is it? Is it available with a steel bracelet?

I also like diver style watches on Nato straps, just seem to work for me

How do you rate the aeromatics I've had my eye on a couple of the 1912 range.

I have had the A1229 for over 2 years now and it has been worn a LOT, it is probaly my favourite looking watch. It has a Miyota (citizen) movement and aside from drunkenly scratching the crystal on a wall last summer I have had no issues with it at all. I put a Timefactors Aviator strap on it as the original straps feel a bit cheap but otherwise a great watch. That said they are not tough watches, I bought a friend of mine one and he dropped it on a marble floor and smashed the crystal and damaged the second hand - binned!

The Tauchmeister (same company) diver which I use when working on the car gets scraped against alsorts when dragged through the engine bay and aside from a scratched cyclopse (date bubble) and lots of swirlies, it has stood up very well. That one is Swiss Ronda quartz movement.

The 2 autos I have have lead a very sheltered life, but feel sturdy enough to wear more often.

I have read reports of the red dye running out of the leather strap, but the straps do feel a bit cheap - easily fixed.

There are plenty of mixed reviews about them, but I am in the positive camp from my experiences. Which one/ones are you interested in?

The two I'm interested in are the A1254B and maybe the A1143 from Werners Flying Watches.

A very nice watch for the money. What does the crown at 2 o'clock do? Is it for the illuminator?

Easy Steve, get a strap pin/springbar remover of ebay (£2.50 delivered) then just find a correct size strap you like and a couple of mins your done. Those composite straps are a pig to get off without scratching the watch lugs.
Nice looking watch BTW, if you like them a Nato strap would work with it and you don't have the problem of not getting the strap wet.
I changed the strap on my diver watch from a composite/rubber strap because I don't like them at all.......

If you press that then there are two very bright White LED's at the 12 and 6 o'clock position, and in darkness they do knock out some light !!!

Sorry Steve, I misread your post, I thought you had already changed the strap. Have a look at Timefactors for affordable and good quality straps. The Natos are very highly regarded from Eddie (I have one), he has a nice selection of leather straps too (I've had one for almost 2 years and is wearing well). I would guess that you would need a 20mm lug width, but check that.

Bought in NYC with my "Casino Pot" that I couldn't use cos as the hotel concierge advised "It is illegal to gamble in the state of New york Sir. The nearest casino is over two hours drive"

Grrr, oh well, my $400 dollars bought me a great watch that I never have to replace the batteries.

Only one issue re the Battery, I had a Kinetic, fine for the first few years then gradually worked for less time if not worn. In the end when not worn watch stopped. Took it back to the Jewelers where it was purchased, yes no problem Sir we can return it to Seiko they will only charge you £80 odd pounds to put a new rechargeable battery in it for you. The watch had cost £179 so threw it in the bin went on e bay paid £170 for a 1964 Omega Seamaster Automatic, might gain a couple of minutes a month but a joy to wear and use it all the time.
Never again for me a watch with a battery, but a bit like DE shaving, a return to the old traditions and all the better for it.

+1 on that, my Kinetic Divers watch gave up after a few years but including the battery, kinetic charger and reseal it is over £200.00 to get fixed. So it is heading for the bin, I was told at the time that I would never need to buy a battery again. But having said that it did last about 6 years so I suppose I got my monies worth out of it.
Now I wear an automatic Christopher Ward watch, no batteries 5 year g'tee keeps good time, no gimmicks just a quality movement.
But you pays your money so you buys what you want.....

Had mine about 5 years so far.
Its not always worn but I know when the battery is low cos it double ticks on the second hand so I then wear it regularly for a while.

Time will tell?

I have these two watches :

Seiko Arctura Chronograph Kinetic and another Seiko Kinetic Divers 200m . should last a few years yet !

I've got a Seiko Automatic (7005-8022) from the 70's I got of the bay of evil for 25 odd quid inc postage.
Had it for about a month now, works like a dream, and I presume it having worked for 40 years, it should last another few...

What can you buy watch wise for less than 30 quid nowadays?
