Weber back

My God... some users from the spanish forum from I am are providing us with some information that could clarify why Weber had many problems with their ARC&DLC heads. Just take a look:

The piece you see that atracks the DLC head is an IMAM/MAGNET. This means that DLC&ARC heads (yes, some people have tested this with an ARC head as well) are made of an high iron percentage steel, much worse than a 316L stainless steel. You can not do the same with a Bulldog handle for example because it is made of REAL stainless steel.

And if DLC&ARC cover has a poor quality, then rust will appear very quickly. You can build your own conclusions with this information...

My ARC and DLC heads are definitely attracted to a magnet - proving they have an iron content.

I cannot find any info from Weber telling us the heads are coated stainless - though I've always thought they were. The shiny heads are advertised as stainless, for sure.

Anyone know the iron content of the lowest grade of stainless? Either way, don't leave a wet blade in your coated head and I'll lay odds you won't get rusting.

I'm wondering why I keep springing to the defense of Weber razors. Is it because I have a Pils which were reputed to have rusting problems but I never have. Because the same applies to Webers? But I think it's because I so dislike a negative rumour mill and because that mill may well put off newbies from enjoying a great shave. I also question the motives of the rumour mongers.

This article may help.

http://www.corrosionist.com/Stainless_Steel_grades.htm

It talks about magnetic stainless steel being poor at resisting corrosion (unlike some other grades).

I think you're totally right about people talking in potentials for corrosion Carl, rather than it necessarily being an actuality in every case.

It doesn't necessarily follow that because one person has rust problems with a particular razor that every other razor will suffer from that problem.

I read on another forum that corrosion issues can be caused by tooling problems when the product is made, so it may not be down to the actual steel itself.

Weber web claims that its heads is made with 17-4PH grade steel. I assume they are talking about current heads, not DLC&ARC covered ones. I have seen this paper about that kind of steel:

http://www.aksteel.com/pdf/markets_products/stainless/precipitation/17-4_PH_Data_Sheet.pdf

and it seems a good quality, not rusting danger steel. But we don't know if old heads are made of the same grade of steel or what. And rust problems with DLC&ARC heads are not rumours, here you can see a very graphic example:

I must clarify: for me Weber ARC is a fantastic razor, probably the smoothest one I have tested, but I think that is a honest point warming people with any issue about quality/materials no matter how good it shaves.

Cheers!

Don't know why Weber didn't close the holes in the two lugs on the end cap as that is a crevice where rusting could easily start. Those pics look bad but spotted rust in one of those lugs.

The more information the better informed the decision. Up to each of us what to believe of course.

I know you like the Weber performance quite a bit, so it's most probably not a question of a hidden agenda or reason for posting the link.

Thanks....I found that interesting.

Erhm.. High iron percentage?? Any steel IS iron, it's just about the carbon content and alloys. And that carbon content is way under 2%, and alloys may be another 10. So the rest (about or just under 90%) is still.. Guess what - iron.

Still no sign of DLC being in stock. The current Mrs Stan will soon be ordering plan B, a Merkur Futur and Weber will lose a sale as I will have enough hardware for the time being. I particularly dislike companies that carry on advertising stuff that us just never available.

It said on twitter the DLC will be available in a couple of weeks.
