Donated to me (circa 91) as long as I fixed it so that summer I bought a welding kit instead of a new subframe, got 22 people in it after watching record breakers. Trashed the engine after driving back from Europe and not checking the oil and then sold it for 50 quid to the host of a Rum 'n' Reggae party because it will save on paint. (not all in one week I hasten to add)

I bought a pieace of shit Ford with a friend when I was 18 and I thought I never would buy another Ford, but sure enough I did when my daughter was born - I'll never buy a Ford again.

Saved up for ages for it and I seem to remember the insurance costing several times more than the car. When I was cleaning out the inside took out the carpets to discover the only thing that was holding one of the back wheels on was the shock absorber - Then I got to save up some more for some welding work! Sorted out the binding brakes, the rusty sills and wheelarches and the worst automatic choke ever devised by man and then sold it to my sister, whos other-half then promptly totalled it on the by-pass. On the plus side - it cost 8 quid to fill it from empty which reminds me, the petrol gauge stopped working if there was less than quarter of a tank of fuel in there. Quality motoring.

I bought a Ford Escort 1.3GL in silver with blue seats, YKB 866W, in 1990 a month after passing my test. I had it about 6 months, loved the car more than anything, never had any adventures though, then got bored and sold it! Been doing that pretty much ever since and now I trade cars so different one every week!

1975 VW Beetle 1303, needed lots of welding every year unfortunately. Drum brakes all round were an experience. It was bright yellow with a 1600 engine and twin carb. Sounded and smelled great :D. I loved working on it and planned a grand tour to follow le tour in it but it never happened sadly. After a while I couldn't afford to keep getting it repaired and it sat on the drive for a couple of years before I donated it to a restorer. I kept it going as long as I could using this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Keep-Volkswagen-Alive-Step---step/dp/1566913101/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343997299&sr=8-1 which incidentally is a good read even if you don't have an air cooled vw.

1979 Fiat 126bis (that's the posh/Polish-built one with the 704cc engine, not the crappy 594cc engine of the plain 126) for £48 from "Big Mike's Cheap Cars" of Darlington with 9 months tax on it and 11 months MOT in May 1989. Used it for the summer (front seats out - drove it from the back seat), fitted a pair of "new" tyres that it desperately/legally needed and sold it (front seats refitted) for £350 before heading off to uni in the October. Rattled like a box of spoons (as you'd expect - it was a Fiat after all) but did the job I needed it to do.

Black BMW 316 bought it from Duke McKenzie when I was 18.
I met a girl in a club and the following week she phoned and invited me round to her place.
On the way there my oil light came on, I wasn't stopping for Man nor Beast! 5 minutes later the engine seized. I never made it to her house and never heard from her again:icon_sad:

Your first car and its story in one paragraph.

A brand new Fiesta Mk2 straight after passing my test. It was a red 997cc, great little car, but by the time I sold it the only original bodywork was the drivers door. On once occasion I was hit by an Ice Cream van. Well it did say stop me and buy one, but I didn't get an Ice cream !!! And o it was bought and paid for by me with savings and regular payments.

First car I 'had' was a mk2 Fiesta 998cc in red. But it was given to me so doesn't count.

The first car I bought with my own money was a white c-reg 205 GTi 1600cc. I saw it outside a house of someone I knew. It looked OK from a distance, infact not too bad up close. We did a deal (after he put a new clutch in it) and that was me started on the motoring ladder. Not a bad first car and it taught me so much about driving (did someone say lift-off-oversteer?). I then bought another one, my dad got one, my sister had 2. I will have another one day.

Mine was a '61 Rambler Classic. The front bench seat had a lever that you pulled and the back of the seat dropped back to make a double bed. Had it from 65 - 69 when I was in college. A lot of great memories!:)-)

When I was learning to drive I asked my father what kind of car he learned on? He said a Model T Ford. I asked where he got an 'old' car like that? He said when he had it, it was Brand New!

A red 1972 Hillman Imp. Bought from my cousin for £200. We serviced it at his place, and then my Dad drove it back home for me (I was still on a provisinal licence). It was a real basic version, with really crap seats and it didn't even have a fan for the heater! I spent a few Sunday mornings at the scrap yard getting bits for it to improve the spec. I learned to drive AND took and passed my test in it (passed 2nd time). Great little Coventry Climax engine in it that almost caught fire once, and a dodgy water pump pully that used to loosen itself every so often. Something terminal happened with the clutch and it was scrapped.
