I would go for the 3/4 hollow..always more in desire as is the half hollow..but the 3/4 hollow I feel would mow your whiskers down easier

I'm a bit confused by all the mention of Le Grelot being made by a TI competitor etc.
Does anyone have these razors for comparison?

Le Grelot and TI were separate companies, so Le Grelot was a competitor to TI. When Le Grelot ceased production TI bought up a lot of the pre-forged blanks that were left over. I remember that they 'mullered' a lot of them, but they seem OK now.

In my opinion the old Hospital branded Le Grelots are far superior to TI razors - I have honed a number of each. If you buy a TI branded Le Grelot then only the blank was made by Le Grelot - the subsequent finishing is by TI. Not so long ago a lot of those blanks suffered from poor storage and got quite pitted - you can see the efforts TI went to to get rid of the marks - there are grind lines left right and centre and still some small pit-holes left A client sent me one - brand new - to hone. It had so many tiny holes in the steel that I told him to ask for a replacement or his money back. It turned out that he had already sent back a number of them.

That's in the past though. I only mention it because I'm completely impartial - I don't take a commission from anyone for stocking their razors.

Regards,
Neil

Ok thanks Eric and Neil.

I thought TI razors were held in more esteem than this to be honest but then I'm new to this.

Would I be better in your opinion to stick with a Dovo New and try something like this:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.dovorazors.com/page51.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.dovorazors.com/page51.html</a><!-- m -->

I have a Dovo Bismarck honed by Neil which I find relatively easy to use but want a few more straights so I can rest them. I've tried a vintage straight but really don't get on with it and prefer new.

Your comments would be appreciated.....

I always pass on TI when I look at them as the prices are so high for anything that is not a plain basic round point,
dont rule out revisor razors if you are looking for new.

I have one and very happy with it.

Thanks Pedro

I already have this one on it's way!

Mikael I'm sure recommended them so I'm glad you've seconded that!

The Dovo Astrale caught my eye as it is a half hollow grind and the price is more realistic........

Well my Dovo shaves well and the blades seem to be consistently well turned out, but it would appear that there are some QC problems on the cosmetic side of things nowadays.

I like my Le Grelot hospital and I don´t know much about TI razors.... More than I would like to have one, one day  They do look very nice, some of them. I think I would go for one with their "singing" blade, that´s what they prob does best. Same goes for Dovo, I think they prob makes full hollow blades best. Or :? they make other grinds better becuase they´re not used to it and therefor ... It´s seems to be a crap shot when buying a new blade today. I saw some pictures Andy sent me yesterday, of Dovos new acid etchings on the tangs, it left me very unimpressed. Seems like pining and scales doesn´t meat up to a good standard either. I would much rather own a vintage Dovo, same goes for the other blades.

I know of one German guy who loves TI:s and Sheffield blades (strange mix, but he loves both). I prob end up with some new models of both Dovo and TI, some looks very nice, I think. But if I had one pick it would be a Revisor, I think the general quality of the steel/razor are better than other modern razors I´ve seen/used.

Ok thanks Mikael

I'll wait until my Revisor arrives and I've shaved with it a few times. Like I said I'm very happy with the Dovo I have it was more the lure of a different grind ie the half hollow that attracted me. I spoke to Thomas @ Revisor who confirmed that all their razors were full hollow.

I'll put the fire out in my pocket for now......

Hello Simmo,

Regarding different degree of hollownes I can 't comment as I only own full hollow, TI Le Dandy straight razor however it has quite stiff blade, it is not noticeably flexible. I bought my Thiers Issard Le Dandy here <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.mehr-als-werkzeug.de/category/dickcatalog/Rasiermesser-3545_5607/detail.jsf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.mehr-als-werkzeug.de/categor ... detail.jsf</a><!-- m -->, . Here are the detailed photos if you are interested <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15595" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.theshaveden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15595</a><!-- m --> . Later I also bought TI strop which I use and razor paste at DICK.BIZ. I have been shaving with this razor since September 2009. Though the first razor I had bought (at Different Scent) was Dovo Tortoise, a couple of months prior to Le Dandy, however I had it returned because it had a frowned edge. At the same store I bought DOVO hanging strop which I don't use anymore except the linen side which I pasted with chromium oxide. Blade vise TI razors are really in much higher league than DOVO razors; I think Revisors are made by DOVO (take a good look). The same razors just different markings.
