Cover Versions

Here's a theme: Covers of Hendrix tunes.

These covers by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Belly are awesome. I believe 'better or not' is irrelevant for these two, as they are performed in a spirit the great man himself would approve of...

Dylan: whilst I've got quite a bit of time for him, I could happily get by with just Subterranean Homesick Blues, and there's not a lot of point in covering that one.

Mick, since you clearly know your stuff here's another one: Minor Threat doing 12XU by Wire, (turning a 2 minute song into a 1 minute one without leaving anything out).

The Gloria Jones and Marc Almond are top draw IMO both classics, dont know if I can say the same for marilyn. especially Gloria Jones takes me back to the Northern Soul days when we ran trips up to Wigan casino, great times still love Soul R&B and good old Northern soul.

Some covers work & some don't.

For example Bauhaus' version of Ziggy Stardust was every bit as good as Bowie's, and Neil Young's All Along the Watchtower, The Cult's Born to be Wild and The Presidents of the United States of America version of Video Killed the Radio Star were every bit as good as the original.

Generally, I've really struggled with Dylan covers - IMHO they're almost always never as good as Mr Zimmerman's dulcet tones (Mr Tambourine Man being one example for me I'm afraid, another would be the Animals' House of the Rising Sun); but then I am very partial to early Dylan.

Some just don't work at all. Atomic Kitten's Eternal Flame is a prime example of this fo me.

Continuing the Neil Young theme, I've always liked the Stereophonics cover of Heart of Gold.
