Cover Versions

Many times if the cover adds a different angle to the song then both it and the original are valid in their own right, for example

Mott The Hoople's cover of Lou Reed's 'Sweet Jane' (has to be the studio version, it never came across well Live)

Enjoy.

Jesus Christ Foo are you joking? How or what on earth does that Hoople cover offer that's any better, different or more interesting than the original Reid version? Hoople are or were just a bad cover band that had a talented patron in Bowie.

That's why I didn't post the live video which was truly awful :icon_eek:

But the studio version was ok, I'm not saying it was better than Reed's original, because I know it wasn't.

However I would take issue with your description of Hoople as being just a cover band, most of their music was written by Hunter / Ralphs, Bowie only wrote 'All The Young Dudes' for them because they were about to disband, Bowie rated them highly enough to write that song for them.

As for Mick Ralphs, he subsequently left to form Bad Company .......... Paul Rodgers, Mick Ralphs Simon Kirke and Boz Burrell.

I will try to impress you with the next one .................. I promise.

OK antdad, I'm under pressure here to come up with the goods .............. lol

Hiya,

Far as a nice cover for Sweet Jane goes, this one by the Cowboy Junkies is a pleasant twist on things. They also do a hell of a nice Blue Moon.

Hope you like it,

RIP.

cant believe I just found this thread! Cowboy junkies version of Sweet Jane is mega, as is the St E version of Neil Young. Johnny Cash blows U2's One out of the water but then U2 are only marginally above Coldplay in my utter shite music chart. I heard they supported U2 once *shudders* that gig would be my Clockwork Orange torture.

I remember seeing U2 on their WAR Tour at Hammersmith Palais so I still have a bit of a soft for their early stuff before they became stadium glam rockers.

Shiser, that was over twenty five years ago so that really makes me an old cnut, I will get out the WAR album and prance about bit and pull a hamstring.

Stormy Monday by T-bone Walker is a great song!

It's been covered by a lot of different people but my favourite version of that song by far is by The Allman Brothers, it's amazing!
