So, who's given up on Woolfat?

My first puck seemed to go off as a result of soaking it, and I filed in the large filing cabinet that gets emptied by the council once a week.

My second puck (which is actually Kent) restored my faith in "the Fat", as it works, and continues to work with no trouble.

I too have exactly the same experience: lots of lather, but of an inferior quality, no matter the technique of lathering. I too have relegated the soap to the shower where it actually doesn't do a very good job. It cracks badly, not because of dehydration, but because of over-hydration. I get significantly better shaves and lathers with most other soaps, so I don't see any reason to buy MWF again.

Manimal put me straight on using Woolfat recently in the thread here:

I'd now say it's pretty wonderful stuff.

I've heard so much about this "Marmite" soap that I thought I'd buy some. I figured it would be a 50-50 as to whether it would be my all time favourite or whether I'd move it on.

Having opened the container put some water on it I'm not even sure it'll make my face as I'm no fan of the smell! ... nothing like wet sheep just old, powdery and flowery like the soaps my grandmother would put in her drawers. :(

It doesn't appeal to me, I had a bad experience with tabac and for some reason I expect this to be the same, I am steering clear.

Well,

Since my original post I acquired some new brushes and tried again with MWF.

During testing, I actually got a couple of great lathers from it, and decided that I would order a fresh puck.

After numerous latherings with my new puck, and after a couple (of very decent) shaves with it, I have decided that this soap is not for me.

If it produced the quality of lather that I have experienced only a few times, every time, I would have this in my rotation. As it is, I would say that its ability to produce great lather is seemingly random and very sporadic, and I find the whole process very frustrating and too much like hard work.

Wet shaving for me is usually very enjoyable, so why am I bothering with this frustrating soap?

Cade, Mama Bears, Palmolive stick, Tabac and many many other soaps outperform this soap in every way, and what is more, they smell better too!

I feel I now have some closure. I am giving the puck away to whoever buys my Chubby 2!

Nice, it seems to me that MWF lends itself to face lathering more than any other soap. They should make this stuff as a stick.

used my Kent last night with a Semogue 2000

fault free shave

soaked brush and soap cake for a good 5 mins before hand mind, longer than i would do normally but this is maybe what i should be doing anyway

I did try making a stick by grating some MWF and compressing it into a stick container, it just didn't come together literally.

When I was struggling to bowl lather with it a member pointed out that MWF recommended face lathering in the instructions, I don't remember seeing that in my Kent version but for whatever reason this soap is for face lathering only.

Never understood all the advice about soaking and what-not and extra steps needed to get MWF to 'work'.

Dip brush in water, swirl brush on soap, swirl brush on face, shave.

If this didn't work for me there's no way I would have a cupboard full of the stuff. I just hate 'faffing about'.

I used this for the first time today, thanks HM. Not the best of lathers, but good enough. I am looking forward to getting to grips with it as even with an ok lather I got a great shave & i like the sopay scent too.

Antdad, what went wrong with your shave stick? I too am interested in making one from the Lamb Juice. Teiste made one & put a thread on TSD, i seem too remember he grated the cake ( or put it in a blender ) & then stuffed the mash into a garlic press to "force" it into a stick shape.

T, if you see this, please chime in with some advice.

Woolfat is relatively cheap. The soap requires a little hot water on top to get it going.
As a bog standard fairly scent free soap I think its fine. Due to the cracking I think personally it would make a lousy shave stick.
Erasmic soap is even cheaper and I'm not sure which one I prefer.
Both products last an eternity anyway so I won't have to make a decision until my whiskers turn grey.

This tip is amazing - scrubbing a little lather on the face in between loading the brush has lead me to creating amazing volumes of lather.

The downside is I will now use less soap and will have to wait longer to buy more...
