Sorry if I didn't make it wholly clear - I was speaking along the lines of the necessity for recognition as a result of a social media influence. I'm fortunate that I was able to find a job and move out of my folks home by 25, but that's not to say it's without a substantial student loan/mortgage over my head. It's very clearly the case that these days most younger people will be unable to have such 'luxuries'.@Benz3ne et al I would disagree with the emphasis on the younger generation, plenty of older men who, thanks to work/property prices/pensions that the young ones will never see, have plenty of disposable income to chuck at grown up toys.
Well thank you for the complement regarding my photo but I don't think it's anything special especaly when compaired to some of the other great photos and I said I was not proud of my kit, I do care about it and look after it but I think that's more about my OCD than anything else and my need to keep everything as clean as I can.Yes but it is a very nice photo of the things you don't care about so wouldn't that count under definition 3? The only reason I ever look in SOTD is to look at the pics pretty much solely for the aesthetic pleasure. It's why I don't post in there any more - I have no interest in photographing shaving gear, not my thing, and I use the same stuff for months at a time.
Tell them you're looking at porn,.....they won't bat an eyelid,....tell them them you're on a wet shaving site and they'll think you're barking!I've never thought of it as bragging. I am impressed by a lot of the photos both in terms of both the photography and the kit in the photo. It's a form of window shopping for me - much more interesting than browsing a retail shaving site. I really enjoy checking it out.
The only downside is when people at work see it on my screen and say "WTF are you looking at?"!
Well don't stop for goodness sake! Go under definition 4 a desire "to share your experience with your peers" instead. Don't start taking crap pics either!Well thank you for the complement regarding my photo but I don't think it's anything special especaly when compaired to some of the other great photos and I said I was not proud of my kit, I do care about it and look after it but I think that's more about my OCD than anything else and my need to keep everything as clean as I can.
Definition 3 suggests I am trying to make my shave kit look very impressive or attractive, I can't do that , no matter how good a photo is a Omega 49 is just that , the only thing I can do is perhaps Polish my razor but as I've said that's my OCD and not an attempt to make it more attractive for my photo. I would like to take a photograph that is pleasing to the eye and that other people would find technically good but that has nothing to do with how impressive or attractive my shaving kit looks it's more to do with my skills as a photographer that I feel are sadly lacking but I try.
If I thought that the general veiw was that people post on SOTD to "show off" under definitions two or three I would give up posting my picture's.
No matter what the activity, in any field where something has become a hobby, someone will have spent a lot more on their gear than you did.
Someone once posted a picture of a blade stuck to a stick, which was amusing.
...Those I find the most informative ones and are the ones that make me spend a few minutes searching the internet for additional info on blades, razors or a soap that I never heard of. Most of the times I don't even buy them, just put them on my wishlist or just discard them for whatever reason (price, availability in Europe, etc)...
You've put it in a nutshell.Good photo's, bad photo's, cheap gear, expensive gear. Who cares! We're on here because we all dig proper shaving.
It's good to see all of it...
