The burn, the burn! Straight Newbie from UK.

Welcome to TSR!

I'll spare you of straight advice. I tried to shave with a Rolls Razor several times, but couldn't get that honed and stropped to a useful state. Decided not to bother with the straights

I'll hazard a guess that your blade angle is too high, try it flatter to the face 30 degrees or lower.

More good advice. Judging the angle is not so easy, but a rule of thumb which might help is to raise the spine by its own thickness or thereabouts.

Hi Andy,

In desperation for finding the right angle I was thinking about installing one of these onto my razor:

but given the blind spots it would no doubt create, my next post would probably be a plea for local plastic surgeons specialising in cheap ear and nose reattachment.

Raising the spine by its own thickness is a far more practical way to judge the correct angle.

Thanks!

Well F, I really admire your enthusiasm. My comment about trying to shave with your straight every day should have included the advice to only shave with the grain for the moment. As regards the 'shave-readiness' of your Dovo blade, I feel I must say that I also bought a Dovo from Invisible Edge and it was not shave-ready. I was nearly put off straight shaving but luckily I was kindly lent a razor by Neil Miller who then went on to hone the Dovo. I expect that I was unlucky as I've heard lots of good things about Invisible Edge. As a beginner you won't know what a shave-ready razor feels like so it's really important that you experience one that is.
Not the first time I have heard this BTW. So could also be the case.

to be honest, no dis respect for invisible edge,

but i find neil and arrowhead much better to buy things/deal with because they are so willing to help and reply quickly

i had the same problem with my first razor, i sent it off to ralfy (different forum) and i couldnt believe the difference, i dont know how i managed to shave with it now thinking back, and this was less than a month ago, having it properly sharpened completely changed my technique overnight

remember most places that say shave-ready are not. there judged shave ready by people that have never used them in there life, so how can they judge if there shave ready

personally unless someone here mentions it, about the only place i would expect one to be shave ready from is "neil miller" or a member here on the bst section

Hi!
Interesting read. I'm sticking to de for a while...!

Hi Tim,

With a whole 2 weeks experience behind me one thing I can say is that I wish I had made the change to using a straight years ago. Right now, the shaves are no better than with my DE (O.K some parts better, some worse) but I'm finding the whole experience much more satisfying and enjoyable. I've never really thought shaving was a chore but I am actively looking forward to the next shave now; if anything just to see if I can make the next shave better than the last.

I would say that if you've fancied giving shaving with a straight a go then go for it. The learning curve may be a little steeper and a little longer but it opens up another great avenue for a wet shaver.

I certainly haven't regretted the move and can't see myself picking up my DE again.
