Is anyone on here into knives ?

I am looking to get a basic knife to have with me and the traditional Swiss army ones appeal to me

Been looking at a "tinker" to have in my bag (I use a jack pyke game bag to carry my insulin and lucozade hypostop , mobile charger etc) and an "escort" on my key ring

Any thoughts ?

Just been reading about the history of these little knives and I'm really diggin them !!

I always take a Swiss Army Knife (full size?) on holiday with me, wouldn't be without one. I'm no expert on them, but mine has come in useful time and again. I also have a mini one on my key ring (have to remember to take it off before I fly anywhere). It has a blade, scissors, pen, nail file, Philips and flat head screwdriver... I've used them all except the pen thing. Very, very useful. Get one. You know you need to.

The Tinker is a wee gem Steve and will serve you well. It's what Chris Lubkemann uses in his Little Book of Whittling and has a great range of tools for a small but sturdy pocket knife. My choice, simply because I'm a rough git on things is the Wenger Soldier which is very nearly identical to the old Victorinox Soldier. Victorinox own Wenger these days and they're both fantastic quality at little money. Here's mine:

More importantly, you don't need a good reason to carry either of these as they are non-locking and the main blade is under 3".

Greetings

I carry a Swiss Army knife all the time and my only advice as to which model, is don't get one too big, by that I mean too thick because of the number of gadgets/tools in it. If you do you will find it too heavy and annoying in your pocket and stop carrying it, it will also literally wear a hole in your pocket.

Would you carry 30 quid in loose change in your pocket?

The model Grahame has posted is IMHO excellent and as heavy as you want in a pocket knife, I use the model with only a blade screwdriver and corkscrew.

I just wouldn't be without mine

Regards
Dick.

Great point - don't get owt big and heavy. Been there, done that and sold it.

Steve I do apologise for not properly reading your question, you clearly stated you intend carrying it in a bag, in which case much of what I said is irrelevant as weight and bulk is not such an issue.

In that case I would choose the model with the least number of gadgets that I think I would truly use.

Regards
Dick

I've got more or less the same Knife as you, mine has a saw on it and has been used a lot wouldn't want to leave home with out it. Good knife:)

I currently carry the Gerber "Bear G" one Steve. Again it should be street legal (in Scotland) as the blade is less than 3" & it's non locking. What attracted me was that it's got stud on the side of the blade which, after a bit of lubricating with graphite grease, allows for one hand opening. It's also got a chunkier handle which suits my shaky old handies better. Got mine from Hennie H, gr8 service.
