Getting Ready to Go Back Home

This month's trip ended and I am ready to go back home. Of course, before leaving, I shaved as usual and now it is the time to packing. In terms of shaving, this month's trip has been amazing and superlative thanks to the latest Mastro Livi ArtInox I added to my collection and that I took with me. It certainly was the best choice, always giving an impeccable and luxurious shave. For this shave I used the well known Omega 48 bristle brush along with Cella almond shaving cream and aftershave lotion, the same Mastro Livi is selling in his website offered with an elegant Grifetto shave set. In this shave I also used a new product a friend gave me: a beard balm made by Orthoestetica which I used as a post shave and proved to be as good as my usual olive oil. Ready to go now!

  • Pre-Shave: RazorGuy Pre-Shave Oil
  • Soap: Cella Almond Shaving Cream
  • Brush: Omega Bristle 48
  • Bowl: Chinese Bowl
  • Strop: Mastro Livi Travel Loom Strop and Hand Palm
  • Razor: Mastro Livi ArtInox, 8/8 Full Hollow, Snake Point
  • Post-Shave: Alum Block
  • Post-Shave: Orthoestetica Beard Balm
  • After Shave: Cella Aftershave Lotion

Brush: Omega 21768
Razor: Merkur 34C HD
Soap: Proraso Red Shaving Cream
Post: Proraso Red Aftershave

Sandalwood Sunday, quite enjoy a relaxing Sunday with Proraso Red. Changed up the routine and tried a shave before I showered, not a bad shave per se but doesn't feel as comfortable or easy going as a post shower shave. Proraso Green lined up for tomorrow..

Second shave with the Hone curiosity of @Lann

I changed the blade from a Polsilver to a Gillette 7 o'clock green.
The shave was, again very smooth but I struggled to get a close shave and had to do a few extra passes in places.
The end result is nice but not as close as I like.

I still think it's too heavy. The grip is OK but you find yourself gripping the handle tighter which affects the pressure applied.

Cheers
Rob

I've been away for the last week in Center Parcs, hence the near silence from me... I wanted to use this time as an opportunity to test out a new purchase, a Feather Artist Club SS, along with a couple of other items sent through by @Acer89. Only two shave reports from that time, but I also have another shave report from a shave today that was truly a landmark for me!

So below is a picture of all of the shave gear that I took with me... not all of it was used (surprise), but what was used was good fun.

On to the two shaves I had with the Feather, reports split out below;

Shave one;

First Pass - Feather Artist Club SS - Kai Captain
Second Pass - Gillette Super Slim Adjustable Long Handle - Polsilver Super Iridium
Omega Pro 49
Wickhams 1912 Lemon and Verbena
Speick AB

First use of the 1912, nice, lemony, when lathered get the lavender coming through, then a bit of a strange smell which I attribute to the brush for now as I haven't used the brush for a while. The soap I haven't used again yet, but will be keeping my nose open to see if that smell comes back!

Slight trepidation when using this razor for the first time, a lot of reports that shavettes are the razors that have cut most SR users, as opposed to actual SRs. First pass, lathered up a good lather, cheeks, under the lip and chin area only for this first pass. Reasonable, but not satisfactory. patchy, however no real nicks and only a couple of small weepers to report, so not all bad!

Finished off the second pass with the Slim, no drama, a reasonable shave, nothing special, but was glad to get through unscathed.

Shave two;

First Pass - Feather Artist Club SS - Kai Captain
Second Pass - Gillette Super Slim Adjustable Long Handle - Polsilver Super Iridium
Fine Synthetic
Speick Shaving Cream
Speick AB

Second shave, this time using the Fine synthetic brush. This whipped up a very good lather, but I wasn't a massive fan of the brush itself, it felt fine, but I just don't think I'm a huge lover of synthetics to be honest. Compared to my badgers I just don't get as much enjoyment out of them.

So the Feathers second shave... better than the first, in that I attempted most of the entire face, couldn't finish the neck area and the actual quality of the shave wasn't as good (namely because of the neck area) which left me with some irritation. Unfortunately, that put me out of shaving for the rest of the break as I like to ensure I allow irritation to recover before shaving again. None-the-less, I was happy to give this a go and with practice I think it will provide some lovely shaves!

So, I mentioned in my report above, that today was a landmark for me... Well having used the Feather a couple of times over the last week and having seen how many Straight shaves get posted on the forum, I just couldn't resist giving it a go. I picked up my Le Grelot P.Hospital 5/8 today, stared lovingly at it and thought, bugger it, I'm going for it! I gave it 7/8 very light laps on canvas impregnated with 0.5 chromium oxide crayon. 30 laps on the SRD Modular Paddle rough leather and 30 on the smooth.

I then picked up my new MS brush (pictures of which have been posted in the MS/LS thread on ATG) and breaking my usual trend of lathering up with Wickhams 1912 Cashmere, I opted for the Le Bleu instead. A great brush and the full report is available in the aforementioned thread!

Anyway, back to the shave, first pass, starting on the cheeks, with some trepidation of course. Cheeks seem to be going fine, strong hand on the right side of my face, concentrating of course. Then, I feel the razor catch, nothing major but I know there will be some blood, low and behold a razor (ba-doom) thin line, around a third of the length of the blade starts to gently pool blood, feck it, I'm not ending the shave there. Weak hand, left side of the face, no issues. Strong hand, under the nose, no problem, under the lip and chin, still going fine! Right, screw this, I'm going for the neck, manage to do the whole thing without too much issue, aside from a couple of tiny weepers. During this time, I have a couple of beads of sweat rolling down the side of my head and have wiped the "cut" a couple of times. This has now stopped bleeding and just for fun, I've attached a pic of the cut at this stage of the shave. It's almost completely disappeared now an hour after the shave.

Well, after the relative success of the first pass, I have actually gained some confidence and for the first time in my life, go for a second pass. Without boring you all shitless, it went bloody well. I couldn't believe it, I finished a two pass shave with a straight and had absolutely no need to use the Schick E3 (Again from @Acer89) that I thought would be required for the second pass and I'm yet to use yet. I managed my entire face and neck, with a finish that is actually completely respectable and in places almost the same level of finish as I'd get from my best razors. Of course, there are a couple of patches that are rougher, namely under my jawline, but unbelievably (to me) under the nose and then chin area are absolutely fine, the place that is meant to be hardest to shave! I'm very proud of myself, as you can probably tell, but I can honestly see SR shaving becoming a much more regular occurrence in the months to come. I have zero irritation and despite those couple of little weepers and the "cut", none of these are now visible. Really chuffed, @Fergiebilly definitely can't say anything bad about your edge now :D ha.
