Albums (CDs)

Having recently watched the feast of entertainment on BBC4 relating to the beloved Album format for music, it prompted me at the weekend to have a look through the mega thick "1001 Albums To Hear Before You Die" book that has been sat on my bookshelf for some time.

Whilst I understand that this is totally subjective, I have to say that on the few that I have initially sought more information on via Amazon play samples etc I have been pleasantly surprised.

So, purely as a bit of fun what would you put forward to be included in the above, and if it happens to be included within the book I will post the brief review to see if you concur.

Pete

Album's (Cd's)

I'll put 3 as well then:

1. The Stone Roses - The stone roses
2. The Streets - A grand don't come for free
3. Public Enemy - it takes a nation of millions to hold us back

RE: Album's (Cd's)

- the verve - urban hymns
- nirvana - never mind
- pink Floyd - dark side of the moon
- Massive attack - mezzanine
- radiohead - the bends
- Neil young - harvest
- nick drake - five leaves left
- van Morrison - astral weeks
- Brian eno - ambient for airports
- air - moon safari
- miles Davis - kind of blue
- dave Brubeck quartet - time out

I have hundreds more albums I think are ones you have to listen to before you pop your clogs, but we will leave it there for now

RE: Album's (Cd's)

The first three, no five, no EIGHT! that came to mind just now were:

Divine Comedy - Promenade
They Might Be Giants - Lincoln
Saint Etienne - Tiger Bay
Trip Shakespeare - Across The Universe
Sugar - Sugar
Richard Thompson - Rumor and Sigh
Jellyfish - Bellybutton
One Dove - Morning Dove White

I started with three then kept thinking of albums that, to me, are brilliant. No idea if they can be classed a classic, but there are one or two contenders there.

RE: Album's (Cd's)

U2 - The Joshua Tree; The Unforgettable Fire
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
James - Millionaires
Eagles - Hotel California
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I, II, III, Four Symbols & Physical Graffiti
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Legend
Pink Floyd - Pulse
Oasis - Definitely Maybe; What's the Story;
The Beatles - Revolver; Sergeant Pepper's
The Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request
Nirvana - Nevermind; In Utero
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced; Axis: Bold as Love
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Ocean Colour Scene - Moseley Shoals
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde

That'll do Donkey, that'll do.

RE: Album's (Cd's)

Lou Reed Transformer
Paul Simon Graceland
David Bowie Greatest hits from the 1970s
Marvin Gaye What's going on
Isley Brother Behind a painted smile
Anything by Nina Simmone

I'll leave it at that but I could probably go on all night naming so many great albums.

I'll limit myself to three.

The Smiths: This Smiths (1984 I think)

Neil Young Greatest Hits

and AC/DC Back in Black

Hi, This Smiths album doesn't feature and neither does the Neil Young choice, although I think that is because it is a Greatest Hits compilation as he does feature elsewhere.

Back in Black is in there as the first album following the death of Bon Scott and the introduction of Brian Johnson.

Also states that this is the album which broke America for them.

1 = Yes included, with artwork inspired by Jackson Pollack. "The Stone Roses man aged to sum up the seemingly free spirit of their era while simultaneously recalling the creative hotbed of sixties rock and pop. That they inadvertently produced an album more than capable of standing up to that bygone era is a marvel"

2= Yes included.

3= Yes included. "Music's worst nightmare - Public Enemy- are noise's best friend"

1. Muse - Origin of Symmetry
2. Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
3. White Lies - To Lose my Life

1 = No, but think this was released after the book to which I am referring.

2 = No.

3 = No, but maybe as above for 1?
