Last.FM subscription is only £3 a month and you can stream it to some internet radio devices at home.Spotify is just annoying me now, since they decided to restrict the time allowed to listen all I seem to get is those annoying adverts.I think they tested the staff to see who would sound the most irritating through headphones and got them to read the scripts.Anyway does anyone use a radio capable of streaming? I am looking at this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roberts-Stream- ... roduct_top

I don't have one but I did ask about it.

I recommended the Squeezebox Boom in that thread and wouldn't hesitate to do the same here. I've accessed my last.fm profile with it in the past and it works very well (although I haven't used it for a while). There are other products available in the Squeezebox range that might be worth checking out as well.

I would like to listen to some UK station(s) every now and then via my personal computer.

Could someone then please recommend a couple of nice stations (news but also good music ones) that are worth listening to?

Thank you.

BBC London isn't bad between 12.00 and 5.00pm...but it's naturally London rather than UK centric and the regular jockey's are on holiday at the moment, if you are averse to commercials cruise the bbc website and see what takes your fancy, the news rarely changes much over 12 - 24hrs.

World Service, R2,3 & 6 for music. R4 & 5 is speech only.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ or local.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/radio/index.shtml

I'd start here -> http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/

Radio 1 = charty stuff
Radio 2 = more skewed towards the over 50s
Radio 3 = classical music (and jazz)
Radio 4 = news,comedy & drama
Radio 5 live = news & sport
Radio 6 = proper music
Radio 1extra = primarily "urban" music
Radio 4 Extra = repeats of the comedy & drama from Radio 4 (from the last million years)
Radio 5 live Sports Extra = yet more sports coverage
World Service = 24 hour rolling news basically
Asian Network = surprisingly enough Asian-interest (and music)

Then there's all the BBC local (and 'local national' like Wales, Scotland, N Ireland) stations - each with their own sound. Typically the sports coverage is receivable in the UK only (GeoIP restricted) without taking countermeasures.

Thank you.

You may not believe it, but when I wrote the above post I had the BBC Radio web page opened in one tab in my Firefox. Looking at the page, I saw all that Radio 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. and was thinking "what the hell is all that... so many programs... I need to know what's each program for..."

We didn't have all these when I was in the UK from 1989-1995...

Your posts couldn't come at a better moment - many thanks.

I think you'll find they go back a lot further than that. Endless repeats of The Goons for example. :icon_rolleyes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Radio#National_.28UK.29 - a more PC version of the list of what the stations are and do...

We had most of them though (R1,2,3,4,5, World Service, Nations & Local) :)

The Nations (Scotland, Wales, Ulster/Foyle) & Local Radio have a feel that's a mix between Radio 1,2 & 4 - with a bit of 5 thrown in for good measure. They vary massively in their mix of music - for example Radio Scotland makes payout fees to more artists than almost all other BBC radio stations, Radio Ulster is very speech-oriented (and it's often in quite impenetrable vernacular).

Then there's the properly impenetrable - Radio Cymru (in Welsh) and Radio nan Gaidheal (in Gaelic) :D

Ah, but ISIHAC from 1972 as well (also available on RTÉ Digital)

Yes there is some decent stuff, but a real mixture. I usually listen in bed when, between 10 and 12, there is a mixture of some gems and some utter rubbish. I woke up this morning to Rogue Male. :icon_razz:

A man who likes an unfunny bloke pretending to be a rapper offers an opinion on comic taste, hmm...:icon_biggrin::icon_cheesygrin::icon_razz:
Seriously, though - it was and still is popular for a reason.:sleepy:
