Old lather catchers often sport some of the most intricate detail work even seen on razors.
I love the look of this old French one I have - I can't even begin to guess what something like would cost if made today... I mean even the blade-lockdown tab is engraved!

Just got this in today and started the cleaning process. Got to admit that this is the first razor where I actually had to read the instructions to figure out.

Thanks, if memory serves me right it was the very first out of 4-5 GEM Damaskeene models and the only one w/ an open comb. It was only made for three-four years I believe (1912-1915). They are relatively rare but you still see maybe one/month on the bay.

I Used this SE Some Time Ago..These Blades were Not Designed to be Honed..They Came Shave Ready from the Factory & were Designed to be Stropped & Refreshed on Pastes & when that Stopped Working they were Disposable..

That Said..They Can be Honed with One Layer of Cello Tape or No Tape..Not Electrical Tape..They Require a Gentle Touch Whilst Honing them or the Bevel is Easily Destroyed..If You Don't have Good Honing Skills I Would Suggest Sending them to Someone that Does..

Also the Auto Strop Uses Far Too Much Pressure & the Strops Tend to be Pish Quality..Better to Strop them Free Hand with One Layer of Cello Tape with Wings at the Side to Flip it Over on a Normal Strop..That's About it..

The Main Issue with Most Auto Strop Designs is that they Can Put a Lot of Downward Pressure on the Blade & its Not the Best Shaving Edge that Can Be Achieved by Stropping the Blade with a Lighter Touch Outwith the System..

The Wilkinson is a Fairly Aggressive Shaver..It Has an Adjustable Feature & its Very Subtle to Use..It Does a Good Job Tho..There is also a Bit of a Learning Curve in Learning to Use a Hollow Ground Blade SE..They are Different Animals to Factory Blade SEs..They are as Good as the Guy that's Honed the Blade..

Aye..These Blades Can be More Finicky to Hone Sometimes than an SR because they are So Short..

Is there some sort of jig you can use like it was a wood plain blade? Something to hold at the right angle while you hone them?
