Akkerman Ink - group buy - a primer for anyone else planning one...

Here's the general plan - if anyone has any suggested improvements I'm open to hear them...

1. We choose our inks - I order it up and it lands here (hopefully all intact) [do we want to order a spare "just in case"? - in a different colour to any of us pick, so more samplage and so if we have a breakage we still have the bottle - which to me is part of the Akkerman attraction]

2. Based on a previous UK-based group buy I read about, there were some breakages. They opined that the breakages would be mitigated against by removing the marble from the bottle. I'm happy to do that (and of course pack the marble in the parcel). - source http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/248891-uk-akkerman-sample-ink-buy/page-3#entry2774574

3. Royal Mail are a bunch of clumsy bastards - but the only ones that will allow 150ml containers of liquids to be posted by private individuals at reasonable cost. They specifically exclude glass bottles from being claimed for in the event of them being clumsy bastards. Obvious answer here is to decant into plastic bottles... but that adds to the cost - your collective call if you think that is worthwhile doing. 5 bottles here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150ml-Unlabelled-Clear-Plastic-Containers-Bottles-Pk5-Storage-Laboratory-Lab-NEW-/380425459292?pt=UK_BOI_Medical_Lab_Equipment_Lab_Supplies_ET&hash=item58931fd65c for £6.50... or 10 for £9.50 here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-X-Plastic-Bottle-Clear-Boston-150ml-Black-Screw-Top-/261215249928?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Natural_AlternativeTherapies&hash=item3cd1a46608

4. Samples - I think 5ml of any colour is a decent sample - but 5ml containers aren't easy/cheap/simple to find - anyone has any inside line on anything suitable (seasonally adjusted for Royal Mail being clumsy bastards...) please yell. Naturally if you aren't giving up any ink, you won't get any samples either though - at least not samples of ink :)

All costs would be socialised on a per bottle basis - so if the total order is 11 bottles and you buy 2, you pay 2/11 of the (€14.50) postage from the Netherlands, for the number of plastic bottles you get (decanted and/or samples) plus the onward UK postage (your choice of service - 1st/2nd/recorded/Special - whatever you like).

I will use the cost to me for the order from Akkerman's straight from my credit card statement. If you pay by paypal - it must be non-gift and you pay the fees. Bank balance transfer will also be available (no fees).

RE: Akkerman Ink - general principle

I bought a pack of these 5ml containers for swapping ink samples on Fountain Pen Network and have some left. If you let me know how many you need I could send you some.

eBay item no. 150416593883

RE: Akkerman Ink - general principle

So... do you/we think the plastic 150ml bottles are worthwhile? I'm agnostic - since mine will get here from the Netherlands (or not)...

And obviously time to start thinking about colours.

Personally I'm thinking #8 Diep Duinwaterblauw or #4 Nassaus Blauw...

In case it makes any difference to anyone I believe #10 is an Iron Gall ink.

RE: Akkerman Ink - general principle

One for me after a lot if consideration. It will be a green but still need to decide.

Glass is fine with the marble removed.

RE: Akkerman Ink - general principle

So that's :

13 for chrisbell
8 for Ewan E
6 for majortom
26 for A-W
8 for me (probably)
10 for chris.hale

Plastic is out but I will extract the marble (and include it in the package naturally)

So far that's 4 colours to sample from across 5 people... must be 15 sample pots required so far (is that right? 3 additional colours each for 5 people...)
