i used to go to a lot of gigs and seen some great bands, i was wondering what people consider to be the best guitarist theyve seen.
for me its between jimmy page and steve cropper of booker t and the mgs, i once saw the jazz guitarist mike stern who was technically brilliant but bored the tits off me :)
im looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

Biréli Lagrène without shadow of a doubt, you can't see his hands moving, magic:)
If he is that good how come most people on this forum (that's just a guess by the way) would not even get near to spelling his name right?

Is he better than Status Quo? If yes, how many millions of records has he sold - compared to SQ?

By the way, my vote would be Santana.

Haha Rob, my personal taste is eclectic at the best of time , love SQ as well. He is famous but not in the circles SQ revolve. It was a hard choice between him and Al Dimeola. How many he sold can probably be checked on Wikipedia, and while at it a trip to youtube is a good idea. It is 1920's jazz so maybe Francis Rossi is an admire?

Well I sampled him - and to be honest, I think I prefer the Ukelele band of
GB.

Francis Lickerish, Steve Stewart, John Martyn and Bill Nelson spring instantly to mind. Saw them all live. I think Be-bop Deluxe was my very first 'concert' - Sheffield City Hall, aged around 16. Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape indeed.

Most of the stuff I've seen live has been punk and post-punk, so the notion of "good" or "talented" and "punk" or "post-punk" don't really go together.

That said, Lu Edmonds (presently of PiL) can make most stringed things sing ...

PiL have had some real talent through their doors. ive seen jah wobble about 7 or 8 times and every time hes been absolutely brilliant, a great musician.

Can't choose just one.

John Petrucci (Dream Theater).
Gordon Giltrap.
Steve Vai.
Jon Gomm.
Carl Bowry
Robin Trower.
Steve Lukather.

That should do for now.

Ian

Wow, when did he play for PiL? Didn't know that. Saw them a few times in the late 80s. Stevie Vai's talking guitar is amazing, as is one handed playing, and I seem to recall him playing 2 guitars at once.

Assume that's a fan jamming along in the first, looks too young.
