shaving the scrotum

Tried it once, never again. Uncomfortable is not even close to the right word. That was a long time ago.
If I was to shave my balls now where would I stop. There would be this shaved patch in the middle and hairy legs and stomach. It would just look stupid unless I shaved my legs, stomach, chest etc. .. where would it end.

I have to agree about the irritation, but I think it can be avoided if you shave it almost as often as you shave your face and after the shave just apply some Nivea cream or an aftershave balm without alcohol, and ofcourse you better use an mild safety razor.
I actually wrote about shaving down there on mine Dutch weblog, as I find it quite normal for mine generation ( around 23 / 25 ) to shave there, but I suppose many are past there 35 something and I suppose they didn't grow up in a culture where its all about sex, even in south Korea its all about sex nowadays.
But well Dutch people are maybe more open minded then people from other countries. Btw nice that the discussion became more serious now

I have to confess I've always been of the opinion that none medical total shaving of the pubic area and scrotum on men is for those who are less than well endowed and/or not very confident and wish to give an illusion of size, the same as a wonderbra does, or porn stars.

I would have thought getting rid of the hedge would make the small look smaller, rather than bigger. Unlike a wonderbra there's nothing to give any illusion of size just the rest of your body to gauge it against. Equally I think you need a reasonable dollop of confidence to go swinging your meat and two veg around in all their chicken skin glory.

Having suffered the indignity of sporting an 'NHS' down below, just don't go near yourself with one of those. Picture if you will someone that's stood a bit too close to the Chernobyl sarcophagus, rash, clumps of hair falling out... You get the picture.
