Thought I'd try an old fountain pen of mine.

Love it.
What pen?
You have really solid handwriting btw.
It's an old Platignum Calligraphy pen with a fine italic nib. I fancied a new fountain pen so went for the new Lamy Safari in Dark Lilac. I then got my two old pens out, the Platignum and am old Osmiroid. Not sure if it's the Diamine Jet Black or the Osmiroid needs a good clean but I'm not happy with the flow. Both pens are probably 25 years old though and haven't been used again until this week.

Maybe try soaking the nib over night?

Now to pair your Dark Lilac Lamy Safari....with dark lilac ink ;)

Hi DB, very striking that, like it. It looks like you were writing with an italic nib but the photo shows a "F"ine nib as far as I can make out, is that right?
You should try fitting a stub 1.1mm nib to your Lamy. Very cheap and easy to fit. I have one (fitted to a Lamy AL-star) and it writes italic really nicely.

I still find it very hard to believe - but I've been enabled! It's the colour! Bought a ballpen and a fountain pen. Now to dig out - I know where they are - my old fountain pens and get 'em working. I even have a bottle of ink - assuming it hasn't dried in the years since it was last opened.

Edit: Ink's OK, maybe a little thickened, but the pens are junk and beyond salvation anyway.

Welcome to the club :)
Would love to see a photo or three of the pens you're sporting!

Btw, when it comes to ballpoint pens the refill is basically what 'makes the pen' as far as the writing goes.
For Parker ballpoint pens I personally LOVE the Schmidt 9000 easyFlow refills.
You can get 5-6 of them for $7 or so and they almost makes your ballpoint feel like a rollerball as the ink flows so smoothly as there's hardly any scratch when writing :)

Note: Not all refills fits all pens though so when you buy something make sure to pick the right size :)

My pens were/are a Parker 45 and either a Japanese or Korean - I think the former - gift from someone to do with ships. I'll put a magnifying glass over it and see if i can discover the companies - maker and giver.

See that pen porn ^^^^ - that's what did for me. Ain't it just so purdy? I ordered one with a broad nib but already think I should maybe have bought an italic nib of one width or another.

I have one with an EF nib (I write really small) in the check-out bag with a Z24 converter so I can use bottled inks...waiting for me to make up my mind.

You can buy nibs separately though I believe.

Oh decisions....

Ah, this video shows how easy it is to swap out nibs:
